6.0 turbo problems

Was heading home in the 06 f450 to day when started making a terrible squealing noise. Let off the throttle and it stops. Thought maybe a blown turbo pipe but seem to be coming from the turbo its self. Pulled off the intake and felt of the turbo and there is some side to side play. Squeals when engine is running, turn off and stops squealing, and spins free. Looks like it may wobble a little bit while spooling down. Any ideals?

Well it should have some up/down or side/side play, it shouldn't have any in/out play. Check that. It has some play side to side because there is a loose gap in there for oil to fill. The idea is that once the truck is running and oil is going in there, the turbine shaft rides on a "sheet" of oil instead of metal to metal. So with it off you would notice this small slop. Though it shouldn't be so excessive it's hitting the housing or anything.

If it's definitely the turbo squealing, might not hurt to yank it and clean it and see if it fixes it. You can also get rebuild kits on ebay for under $100. :c:

Thanks for the reply, I haven't had a chance to pull it yet. It seems like there was a loud pop and then it starter squealing. How much boost should you show when you are standing on it with a load? I have only had this one running for a couple of months and my 04 dose not have a boost gage, so I have nothing to compare to. Just asking because it has never shone more than twenty. Also it doesn't pull as well as the 04. This truck is all stock except for the egr delete.

usually unloaded, full throttle they run 22-24 or so. I've seen closer to 30 on stock tuning towing a trailer.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of a rebuild, you can usually find stock 05-07 turbos in the $300 price range on the forums.

easy fix

Finaly got to tear into truck pulled the turbo got ot looking around and noticed black soot around the clamp on the egr cooler. Touched it and it was hanging loose, tightened clampreinstalled turbo good to go.:jump:

Wow way more lucky then i was. mine had just enough play to have the compressor wheel rub the housing. And i mean barely rub. I had to really look at it to even see the signs of it touching the housing. And worst part was it was a reman turbo from ford. Ahh well glad i worked out for you.
