P0401 after egr delete

I keep getting a p0401 code for insuficient EGR flow with an EGR delete installed. It doesnt have the block off plate for the valve, so the valve is still installed in the intake. Dealt with many of these just like this but never a code or an issue. All previous ones have had a programmer of some kind, this one doesnt. Is a programmer needed to run a delete tube? Or is the block off plate needed to properly run a delete? Have replaced every other part in the system, MAP sensor, MAF sensor, EBP sensor and tube because it broke when trying to remove to check for carbon build up, removed intake to be hot tanked, reprogrammed the PCM. It takes roughly 140 miles to set code after it is cleared. Never run in to this before, Its normally only one of 2 things, EBP or EGR valve, but my thought is now that the sensor readings are being thrown off by no flow from exhaust to EGR valve. Anyone ever dealt with this before?

Sorry the truck is an 06 dually and everything else but the delete is stock.

It will have the insufficient flow if u don't use a programmer. Did u leave the valve plugged in? Does it throw the check engine light? The few I've deleted with out a programmer, just threw a soft code, one that stays on the truck, but doesn't affect drivability. And usually doesn't trip the CEL

03/04s don't light the CEL, but 05 and up will. I had a 0401 for briefly after deleting my EGR cooler. When I took out the valve, it popped a 0405 and the VGT wouldn't cycle properly. Reconnected valve, all good.

If the CEL isn't on, I wouldn't sweat that code. If the CEL comes on, an SCT custom tune will defeat it for that code.

Well if you delete the cooler, there is no flow going to the valve, so it sees that. Whether the valve is in there or not doesn't matter. Typically, like Karl said 03/04 dont need a programmer, 05+ do, and not just any, you need an SCT and most likely custom tunes.

Being an 06, it's going to need a custom tuned SCT.

Depending on what stategy that you have, removing the EGR valve can effect the fan and the VGT cycling. I found that out the hard way.

Thank you for the info, customer didnt want a programmer so I put a cooler back in. My dealer sold the truck with it already installed. Ill remember you need a tuner for next time around. Thank you again.
