coolant problem!

well i was about to wire some new fog lights and when i opened the hood i saw white residue in a ring under the fill cap and a line running down the side of the bottle. the truck is running perfectly fine, just did a fuel filter, had oil changed 2000 miles ago. and all i have done to the truck is banks intake, 4 inch turbo back straight pipe, and have an sct. there might be more done to it but im not sure cause i bought it used from the dealer. any help is appreciated

Where is the coolant at in the tank at the min line? below? Is it using coolant? Have you bought the new degas cap from the dealer yet? Also could be blown head gaskets

it has a sticker on it that says to ignore marks on bottle and has a full and min line, its at the min line on the sticker, not sure if its using coolant. but i have not bought a new cap. and i have put 9000 miles on the truck since i bought it and this has never happened before

once thes caps have let pressure out like that they should be replaced, they are kinda junky, hopefully that is it. And yes it should be at the min line, all trucks ballance out a little different, some the coolant stays higher and some lower. When you start pushing alot of coolant out then probably head gasket time.

Thanks for the help. But I just cleaned my egr valve and now I have white smoke. There was not white smoke before. What could that be?

When are you seeing white smoke?

What coolant do you have in the truck? If it is gold you might be seeing silicates becoming un-suspended... have you run the truck hot?

Mdub707 09-10-2012 12:23 PM

What does the smoke smell like before we all jump to conclusions. See if it smells like fuel or coolant. If it's coolant it will be sweet smelling, if it's fuel it will probably burn your eyes a little lol.

Well I let it idle for a few minutes this morning and now the smoke is gone. But it was smoking at idle and worse when on throttle. But should I have cleaned the intake out when I cleaned ny egr.valve?

Mdub707 09-10-2012 12:56 PM

It's a little more complicated. I'm assuming you're referring to the intake manifold right? You can, not necessary, but they get pretty choked up with crap in there.

bigred91 09-10-2012 01:50 PM

yeah, the intake manifold. i noticed theres was a lot of crap in there. it was almost impossible to get the egr valve out, and when i did there was a good half an inch of soot stuck on the bottom. and that wass all i saw inside the intake manifold. should i clean it with carb cleaner or just scrape it clean?
