We have a 2004 f250 6.0 with about 85000 miles. Bought it used in 07. In 2010 it broke down on us and was In the shop for about a year. Got it back and a couple of months after we got it back it started running like crap. I know there are issues with this engine and year model. The truck sounds like it wants to shut of like it isn't getting any or too much deisel sometimes; we've had the heads rebuilt; new egr cooler; egr valve; last weekend put on a new fuel pump.......we are at a loss as to why the truck still runs like crap. PLEASE GIVE ADVICE. The truck is paid for we do not want to get rid of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely a HPOP problem, when it doesn't put out enough pessure it delays the timing and can make it billow smoke. There are a number of things you can do, one of th first i to test the FICM and make sure that is good/ the is a sticky at the top of the 6.0 section on how to do this/ It might be worth while to invest in Autoenginuity with the Ford bundle. The AE is a diagnostic tool that downloads on a laptop computer and has the adapter to hook to the truck, you will be able to do everything that the dealer can do as far as diagnosing and testing different things onthe truck. You can do load balance tests, shut down individual injectors, most importantly you will be able to monitor ICP desired,ICP actual, IPR dut cycle, that will tell you he health of the HPOP. The truck was in the shop for a year? Holy crap....

I don't mean to sound like the old professor here... but... throwing parts at something will never fix it. It needs to be diagnosed properly, verified, then repaired. The 6.0 gets a REALLY bad rep (like you've heard) because of people throwing parts at them and never getting them fixed correctly.
