Cranks but no start- help please

2005 F-250 cc with 6.0 auto 4x4 170,000mi. Edge juice with attitude. Been running Great. Last week it took a few seconds to start and would run kinda sluggish and smoke a little white and black til it got warmed up. Yesterday I turned it off to get fuel and it would crank and crank but no start. It canks strong. I tried it last night and I couldn't read it quick enough but it said some kind of fault? Any ideas? I don't drive it much other than to go into town every other week but I don't wan it just sitting around. I've driven it maybe 100 miles in the last 3 weeks. Thanks guys:argh:

Does it restart fine once it's cooled off? Does it only seem to happen when the truck is warm? Probably the STC fitting on the HPOP.

Sam Wiborg 08-20-2012 03:20 PM

No. It wont start at all. Just cranks. After about 5 secs it says tpc fault on the dash. I check the Ipc sensor and I didn't see any oil in it. I live 40 mi from town and don't have a way to check codes. Is there anyway to test the hpop or the stc or the crank position sensor or the iPr?

Mdub707 08-20-2012 03:31 PM

TBC fault is just the brake controller, I wouldn't worry about that right now.

When you crank, look to see if the oil pressure gauge on the dash comes up. You may have to crank for a while, mine took like 6-7 full seconds before it comes up.

One thing to note is if you have an oil bypass system it may even take longer for it to show pressure on the guage, check the bassics, fuel, oil pressure , air. you can pull the IPR to see if the screen is torn and holding the ipr open.

i have a 04 f250 sound like i am having the same problem i bought my truck last a week ago and it ran great i put an edge tuner on it and it started right up ran bad ass went to turn the truck off for like 10 min and when i tried to start it would not start just cranked and cranked about 4 hours later went back and cranked it about 10 times and it started drove it home parked it pluged it in and came out the next morning had to crank and crank it to get it to start when it did i drove to my shop noticed at idle had no oil pressure but when i gave it gas oil pressure was fine not it will not start and just cranks any ideas of what could be wrong i need my truck back yesterday thanks

can you look at my post on this same thread

Sounds like the low pressure oil pump may be going out...

OR, wrong oil filter, like one that uses it's own cap... seen that quite a few times too. Check the oil level as well. Low oil means no oil going to the high pressure oil pump, which means injectors stop firing.

cavscout 11-12-2012 08:37 AM

The oil filter area is filling up so what should I look at next hoop problem

Mdub707 11-12-2012 08:46 AM

How do you know it's filling up? If your oil pressure gauge on the dash is dropping, that means you're not building low pressure oil. Low pressure feeds the high pressure, so if you're losing low pressure, you're certainly not going to have high pressure. We need to start at the beginning and work our way back to the hpop.

cavscout 11-12-2012 08:49 AM

I took the oil filter out pushed the ball down and cranked it and the filter arra filled with oil

Mdub707 11-12-2012 08:57 AM

Right, but how do you know it's doing that with the filter on? What filter are you using? If it's an OEM (motorcraft or International) you should be fine, but with the aftermarket filters that use their own cap, sometimes they don't hold that button down right. When's the last time the filter was changed?

BTW, I'm just going to reply in this thread now instead of both of them haha.

cavscout 11-12-2012 08:58 AM

Ford did the oil change so I a sure it a dealer part

Mdub707 11-12-2012 09:01 AM

Ok that's good to know. I know it seems silly, but have you checked the oil level too? Does the o-ring on the oil filter cap look good?

Here's a good read on the oil filter differences just for fun, page 3 is the one you want to pay attention to: https://www.dieselbombers.com/ford-p...ke-switch.html

With that said, if the gauge on the dash is dropping that means your oil pressure is falling REALLY low, I think the dash gauge only needs something like 5psi to even register, so if it's falling below that, then there's some serious issues. I would almost want to put a stand alone mechanical gauge on it just to verify that.

cavscout 11-12-2012 09:05 AM

Right but when it does start every once in a while the oil pressure is good except for at idle but I have only go it started three times in a week almost every one I have talked to say hoop cause that but

Mdub707 11-12-2012 10:56 AM

Well if you want you can verify the HPOP is working with a scanner. Monitor ICP actual and ICP desired. But if the low pressure oil is falling off, obviously the high pressure readings are going to be wrong too... if the low pressure pump can't supply oil to the high pressure pump, you'll have low high pressure readings, but not because of the high pressure pump itself. See what I'm getting at? It's apparent there's an issue with the low pressure oil coming in if the gauge on the dash is falling off.

Again, you've checked the oil level right? I don't think you ever verified it. How long has it been since the oil was changed on it?

I had this problem and it was the O rings on my left Bank. I pulled the valve covers , removed the the thickem . I had my friend who is a diesel tech at Ford crank it and watched to see which injector was leaking at the top by the fuel rail. I found two that were leaking. I replaced all the 0 Rings on that side. Torqued everything back to spec. High pressure oil leaks suck. Not sure that this is your problem but sure sounds like it may be. Very important to replace all the O rings on each injector on the whole bank of the motor. I did all 4 injectors , not to bad.
