Where to Begin????

04 6l egr delete.Had head gaskets done 20,000 miles ago..Other than that it is stock.Driving down the road the other day it shut off at a stop light.when tried to restart it acted like an old 460 that had vapor locked.Real hard to spin over like the starter was dragging. When it got to one cylinder it was as if it was full of something. Not to sure as to what cylinder or which bank.Got out and disconnected the batterys for about 5 mins. to reset the egr code.got it to fire up and get me home.In that time it smoked like never before and valves sounded like they were coming apart.Once this started I shut it down and the damn thing kept running.Key off and motor still running. For some reason I am thinking Hp oil leak.Any clues????
Thanks

Any way to try and read the codes off of it? Any thing done to it recently?

I was going to recommend testing the FICM, but that shouldn't cause it to keep running.... I have to think about this one.:humm:

would it have codes with no check light on.with no codes kicking the engine light on is what made me think the hp oil leak.it will run fine cold.recently had oil changed.I had no work last month and took it to the dealer I purchased it from and they changed it for free.I asked them to put Rotella back in it but cannot be sure.

I had a problem with one 6.0 where it would crank and run fine when cold, but when it warmed up, it wouldn't do anything, I think we did a pressure check on the fuel rail or something and turned out one of the bolts were leaking or something like that, I am sure one of the moderators can specify on that, it was a long time ago..

Yes, there can always be codes in there even if the CEL isn't on.

Worth checking anyways. How did you end up getting it to shut off after you turned the key off and it kept running?

The more I think about this... I wonder if an injector nozzle split open. Filled the cylinder up with fuel and hydrolocked it partially? Might want to drain the oil and see how much comes out. If there is a lot of extra in there... we may have an issue.

Ok will see if I can get a scan tool to check for codes.it finally stopped by itself.more oil than should be, could be mixed with fuel?

Yes. If you can get a good scan tool that can monitor anything, check for ICP desired, ICP actual and IPR % duty cycle.

Totally odd that a 6.0 would run-on after key was off, it would have to be getting a fuel source from somewhere, pull a CAC tube and make sure it is not really full of oil, there will be some in there as always but what you are looking for is a big puddle of it. It would have to a broken tip on more then 1 cylinder to keep it running I would think. this is a tough one
