Excursion 2004 power stroke 6.0

I have an early 2004 Excursion 6.0, no mods. Recently got an edge monitor and started noticing ECT and EOTs are on the high side according to what I've seen in the books.

Went to Big Bear near LA, going up the hill without a trailer, ECT was hitting 218 at that point the fan kicks in and it cools pretty fast down to 200 or under. EOT before the fan clutch kicks in gets to 228 and also cools off to 215 - low 220s.

I guess I am confused on what's a normal for ECT before the fan kicks in. An independent mechanic told me the fan clutch is bad because it should kick in around 196. Also he says the oils cooler is bad.

There is no white smoke, I replaced the degas bottle's cap, coolant doesn't have oil. Oil is fresh (synthetic).

I am not sure if there is anything wrong with the truck, but I thought about getting a another opinion.

thanks for any comments,

allen

I'd recommend when towing or even just having a 6.0, getting an EGR Delete kit..

The theory behind those was to cool exhaust gas temperatures with coolant but instead it boiled the coolant causing headgasket replacement and other major problems.

Well it doesn't sound like your oil cooler is bad, as it's keeping the two temps close to each other. It's entire purpose is to regulate the temps and keep them even. When it's clogged (bad) it will have very high readings for ONE temp and the other will be way behind. They say anything over a 15* spread is time to rebuild it.

My buddy bought an 05 cc/lb 6.0 a couple years ago and it would puke coolant and get really hot like this. He took the grill off and pressure washed the radiator and intercooler area. I couldn't believe the crap that came out of it. Temps went down to normal after that.

The fan is on a clutch setup, so it's not like an on/off thing. As temps rise, it has pre-determined locations (can never remember the temps) where it engages more and finally fully locked.

How is the coolant level? Is it at the min line on the bottle (this is the new max line) when cold? My fan only comes on when I'm low on coolant. Check that if you haven't yet.

What oil are you using and what oil filter? When's the last time it was changed?
