could this cause these two problems?

Just changed my ipr and hpop. Actually runs now. Truck has 132,000 on her. I didn't get the driver manifold and y pipe tightened up fully so I can hear the exhaust leak when I get on her. Would that leak make my Turbo spool slowly then finally kick in after awhile? Also my AC is set on Max with the blower turned fully up. When I start the truck its blowing through the defrost. After about 30 seconds it'll come out the vents but isn't blowing as hard as it did before I changed the ipr and hpop. Could that exhaust leak have something to do with that also?

An exhaust leak will definately cause slow spool up, you are leaking drive pressure.
The air conditioning problem is a seperate issue, it is caused by a vaccum leak, there is a vaccum pump on pass. side fenderwell, follow all the lines to make sure none of them were knocked loose while you were under the hood. The caccum pump also takes care of the 4whell drive, vaccum pulls the automatic hubs in and if the oring or the bearing seal is damaged it can cause the air conditioning to go to defrost/ defrost is the default setting because for safety reasons it's the most important. Basically it's a vaccum leak, either a bad line or oring or just a loose connection.
Glad you got it running, should be nice and reliable for you now.:c:

Yea I have 4 wheel low issues but not high. I fixed the ac. The little adapter on the passenger valve cover had the grey vaccuum line fall off.

Its your y pipe for sure. Mine had a crack in it did the same thing.

Here's how sensitve airflow to the turbo really is. When I was still running a Brand E tuner on my truck, I neded to go to the local dealership to have something or another tested. I removed the Brand E stuff and needed a pipe plug for the EGT probe hole in the left manifold. This isn't a very big hole, folks, and I had ZERO turbo on the way to the corner hardware store.

By all means, regardless of the size, an exhaust leak before the turbo WILL have adverse effects on your truck.

I got it tightened down finally. Had to wait for motor to cool. How long does it take to get the air out of the system after changing the hpop? I've been romping on it a few times and seems little slow at take off then second gear hits and she takes off nicely. I'm figuring it still has to be air in the system.

bobfbigman 08-05-2012 01:08 PM

I usually say about 40 miles to get 100% of it, it varys, think they recommend 3k rpm for like 15 minutes, but I refuse to hold a diesel at 3k with no load on it, can't be healthy.

Mdub707 08-05-2012 02:43 PM

That gray line that fell off is what closes the valve to the heater core for Max A/C. If it's not attached you'd be leaking vacuum out of it. I'm shocked the vacuum pump can build enough vacuum even with a leak, to make it work right after a short time.

Alright, my issue now is when i am driving and take off from a stop at WOT, the truck takes off like normal, but the turbo is extremely slow to spool and when i have the windows up I can hear a massive air leak that sounds like it is coming from the driver side. I climbed under the truck while it was idling and could hear it faintly. I can't figure out where it is coming from. I made sure the y pipe to manifold bolts are tight and i made sure that the y pipe to turbo are tight also when i put the turbo back in after doing the hpop. When i pop the hood I can hear the turbo making a odd noise that it didn't do before. Could that be from an air leak in the y pipe? Cause i couldn't find anywhere it would be leaking. Or could this just be from air in the system still? I don't have a d@mn clue. After a few seconds the turbo fully spools and the truck just takes off like a bat out of he!!. But even then you can still hear the air under the front of the truck when fully spooled. I'm also getting black smoke from the exhaust when i give it throttle whether i'm starting to go or am already going. then when the turbo finally fully spools I don't get anymore black smoke. The mechanic in town scanned it for me to figure out the hpop was bad and he said apparently there is a programmer on the truck. I've had it for the past 8 months and never knew that. lol. So i don't know what kind or anything either. My guess is the last owner put it on there and just never took it off when he traded the truck in.

One of the quickest ways to know you have a leak is by the smell and even burning you eyes, the hardest one to get lined up is the turbo to Ypipe connection, sometimes you have to use your hand and put it near/without touching/ the connections to find it while it is running, often times when you are trying to feel around the backside of turbo your eyes will start burning from the exhaust so be warned. alot of times it make a hissing sound

1st Diesel 08-05-2012 05:12 PM

Ill double check it tonight if I can. Wife has the truck at work right now. But yea a hissing sound is pretty accurate. I didn't have my face back there cause it was to hot but the clamp looked like it was %100. I tightened the crap out of it when I reinstalled just to keep from it leaking.. ugh so stressful

Curry 08-05-2012 05:20 PM

My y pipe cracked at the flex joint. Every thing you described was happening to me. Smoked like crazy taking off until the turbo caught up then took off like a rocket. MPG dropped insanely. You could also hear a loud constant swooshing when at idle. Loud whistle when driving. Feel behind your turbo and see if its your y pipe.

1st Diesel 08-05-2012 05:49 PM

i'll definitely check into it Curry. Sounds exactly like mine to a T. Think it would be best to replace it? I thought about pulling it and maybe welding it and reinstalling. But depends on the price i guess.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

is there a specific name for that y pipe? i cant find any online to price them.

bobfbigman 08-05-2012 06:04 PM

You can tighten the crap out of that clamp and if its not lined up right it will still leak, there is a slight recess in the turbo flange that the Ypipe fitting has to fit into, sometimes you just have to move the clamp out of the way so you can see that it is all lined up.

I believe it was like $225 from tousley Ford. I'll see what I can find.

If I were you id get the hd y pipe. I didn't have time to wait on my case I couldn't have my truck down for to long. Im going to put the hd bellows on my cracked one and weld them in. I had to get mine from the dealer out here was a little more but gas mileage went to shit and was killing me. Check these out

Ok. I'll double check it tomorrow after work that way the motors cool. it'll be to late to check tonight after the wife gets home. Thank you guys definitely appreciate it
