rear diff slop

I have been having what felt like a delay in the drive train. Well today i crawled underneath my truck and had my wife simulate a power stand. All the mounts look good with no play but i watched the drive shaft and at the rear axle when you put a load on it the drive shafts rotates a half turn without the tires moving!!!!! I know this is a sure sign my diff is gonna come apart!! Any idea what it could be? Is it the ring and pinion? Is is the spider gears? Anyone else have this problem? Its and 04 F350

Did the pinion nose up during this evolution? If so, then that's your answer. These trucks axle wrap like it's cool. Another definition of axle wrap is that the pinion gear is climbing the ring gear.

I would buy 3 quarts of gear lube (traction modifier blend if you have a trac-lock), pop off the diff cover and see what it looks like in there.

Then again, if there's no clunking, howling, or screaming under normal driving, I'd write it off as axle wrap.

well the axle as whole did not really move at all just the drive shaft rotated half a turn with no movement in tires. I will pull the cover off and check it out. The only problem with it is when i accelerate from a dead stop there is a delay form when i hit the pedal and when the truck starts to move and its getting worse. I wrote it off as a bad engine or trans mount and now i checked those are fine. There is a lot of movement in the drive shaft for the tires not to be turning. Someone else said it could poss be back lash from the gears needing to be shimmed? thanks for the advice and info

A delay? Do you still have an EGR cooler? Is there an SCT on it? Hell, my turbo lag was so bad that I almost stuffed my buddy's 7.3 into a city bus because I was expecting the 6.0 turbo lag. An EGR cooler delete and Matt's SRL tune helped out greatly. Trust me, when your rear end is about to let go, it will NOT go quietly.

If the guts to the diff are good, drop the driveshaft and check the pinion nut, it could have come loose, too. Highly unlikely, but it could have.

A delay would most likely come from a torque converter, not a rear end. I f you have a locker in the back/ like most 4x4s do then that is normal. If the rear was going from wear it would be singing so loud you wouldn't be able to hold a conversation. agree, even a dirty egr valve can cause a "delay"

If you mean a Traction Lock from Ford, that's actually a clutched, limited slip differential. Whoever bought mine new didn't bother putting that x in the block, it had a one tire fire open diff. BOOOO!!!!!

I hate the one tire deal:moon: that is why I got lockers in front and back, can't even begin to turn on a dry road in 4x4 though

1. Bob, you're pretty hardcore using lockers fore and aft.

2. Is that a Dana 60 or 50 in the front? I can't tell, the webbing isn't stamped like the D60 under the wife's mud truck.

Pretty hardcore, Bob. :c:

I hate you guys. I have one tire fire. I need to make it go away. :ouch:

Power Trax Lock Right, an OEM Traction Lock (they're rebuildable), or a Detroit Locker. My True Trac is fine until I start trying to write my name in a parking lot, then we have issues.
