turbo removal
Can anyone please tell me the easiest way to get the Turbo out of an 03. I have the exhaust disconnected, the electric plug, the oil line and the two bolts I found to hold it in place. Am I missing anything? I'm so frustrated and kind of screwed my shoulder up trying. Going back at it tomorrow morning.

Ther is a 3rd bolt that holds the turbo to the pedestal, you got the 2 you can see from the front i'm guessing, the 3rd one is almost impossible to see but you can feel it by putting your hand over the turbo on drivers side, it sits between the the exhaust side and feed side ot turbo/ where the Y pipe hooks up/
Make sure you pull the little plastic pins out of the wire harness above turbo, 2 of them you have to remove and the one on pass side you just have to loosen then you can slide it toward drivers side and flip it up out of way, we always use some tywraps and tie it to the pass side windshield wiper, also unbolt the degass bottle and pull it forward a little so you can pull the harness over te mount for thedegass bottle- lets the harness move up and out of the way more. You don't have to unhook the big hose on the bottom of the degass bottle but the 2 small ones will have to be taken off. I use a small prybar to pry the turbo up off the drain tube, only on the 03s and early 04s, the 05s and up seem to pull right up by hand easier.when you get the drain tube clear pull it slightly forward and then you kind of roll it up and out the pass side of oil filter housing, {be carefull of the hot wire on alternator} |
Ahhhhh. So I wouldn't have spent an hour and a half if I would've found the other bolt. I was prying like crazy. I'm so glad I didn't break anything now. Well that takes a lot of stress away. Thanks Bob. :c:

Use a 6 point socket on that bolt... I stripped mine on a 12point took 3 days of creativity to get it out

Can u actually see it from the driver side? Or is it a blind find?

Also its in a tight area you might confuse it with the bolt on the clamp for the turbo YouTube has a few good turbo removal tricks and tips for that back bolt if it's a pita to get out. In all seriousness though if you feel for one second you might strip it stop and think of a different approach pb blaster works good it might come out easy for you my first turbo removal was a nightmare and I'd hate for you to strip that screw like I did
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Once you find it you can kind of see it if you contort your body if I remember correctly. Once that turbo is out for me all jobs feel like they are down hill what job are you doing |
You also might want to consider doing what I did on the reinstall, take that third bolt and place it gently on the work bench///////////////////AND LEAVE IT THERE, makes removal of turbo a breeze, you will be able to get it out in a half hour next time.:c:

You can see it from the passenger side, place your trouble light down by the manifold and look from the heater box to the middle!
I found using a 1/4 drive ratchet best with the 10 mm socket coming in from the drivers side but looking in from passenger side For reinstall I use a piece of paper towel over the open end of the socket then insert the bolt head. Holds it in there nice while I get lined up!! |
the 03 and early 04 are different thanthe05 and up, the 3rd bolt is horizontal, not vertical like the 05s, makes it a real pita to get to
