Oil Additives?

Is it really nessesary to put oil additives in with your oil?

Eddiebuntain 04-28-2012 10:56 PM

Nope, though some can be beneficial. As long as the oil meets or exceeds the standards required for your motor, you should be good. The rating should be in a little circle on the back label of the oil jug. Example CI-4, which is better than CH-4.:c:

You should never put anything but fresh oil in the engine. Use synthetic.

Lucas is about the worst garbage that can be put in an engine other than additives that have PTFE/Teflon.

lucas has kept MANY of my derby cars running, even after loosing oil psi.

i run RP 15w40 full synthetic in my dually with a bottle of the synthetic lucas. truck uses about a qt of oil in 5000 miles. has 120000 on the engine.

Haters gotta hate

According to the Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic jug, it "features advanced, multi- functional additive technology". Does that mean I shouldn't use it?

It has no business being used in engines. DuPont even sued several companies to try and stop them from using it because its so bad for engines, they lost.

Why are you "hating"?

That isn't synthetic, its a group III oil, a "faux synthetic". Its just normal oil that has been refined more than normal and US law allows them to call it "synthetic". You can thank Castrol for that legal loophole.

No, I'm calling you a hater, hating Lucas

So what counts as synthetic, Mobil One? That's what the Exxon-Mobil sales rep said, but he also said it has an additive package, which would disqualify it from use in your engine.

like dieselcrawler I have been using royal purple and lucas in my 7.3 IDI for years and I would love to put my 7.3 against yours..... guarentee I get the fuel economey you wish you were getting....... I too have used lucas in several race cars and offoroad equpiment.... has saved time and bearings from spinning too.... more oil pressure and viscosity.... not just some kind of thickiner.... i average 18-20 mpg's all the time :tu:
