another banks turbo question
 

i recently bought a nonwastegated banks kit turbo y pipe and all exhuast and a spare6.9 motor for $400.. the turbo has no side to side shaft play a little up and down if your looking down at the turbo my question is this thing has been sitting for a couple years and the fins look good but it spins kinda hard.. easily spin with your fingers but wont free spin do you think i would be fine just cleaning it or rebuild it somehow? whats the worst that could happen if i install this thing.. thanks

also this truck eats alot of oil i dont think it is blow by ive heard these old 6.9's had shitty valve seals any good ideas on a quick good fix dont feel like completly rebuilding motor and heads?

I would avoid any shaft play what so ever in a turbo. And if it is not spinning freely I would buy a rebuild kit. The compressor impeller could fly apart sending shrapnal into the engine if it fails for whatever reason.
Have you done a blow by test? pull the dipstick out with the truck running, or just unscrew the oil cap and see if its smoking or there is a lot of pressure. Some people also do it at night and use a flashlight so they can see the smoke better. Try smelling the exhaust when its running, you should be able to tell if its burning oil

ok where can i buy a rebuild kit iv looked but cant find anything?

have fun. thats one of the hardest turbos to find parts for. IIRC it is built by mitsubishi.

up down is fine, in out is bad. (if the turbo is oriented like it will be on the truck) spray a bit of starting fluid down the oil gally to free things up a bit if its got old oil in it. see if that frees things up any for ya. from what you discribe on the turbo i would be scared to run it at all.

X2 on that. Probably be better off going with a more common turbo, since a rebuild is going to be atleast half of the cost of a new one. Try Ebay, I know there is a guy on there selling "knockoff" versions of HX40s that people have been having good results with on 6.5s

this is just like the kit that i bought is there possibly any other turbo that will bolt onto the back housing of this or anything i can do...and is this the turbo that is actually so hard to get parts for im new to this so i tried making it clear... im hoping you guys were thinking of another one haha

hey Im new to 7.3s too haha Ive owned other diesels, all of them IDIs but as far as parts sourcing for these things Im still learning. From what I know about them it was the earlier models of the kit that used the mitsubishi parts. I would try to get a casting number off your turbo and look it up, it should tell you the make/model and with that it will be easier to find a rebuild for, and possibly see what people are using as alternatives. I looked on banks site but they dont tell much info on the model of turbos they offer. But as far as bolting up a different turbo, measure the exhaust flange where it connects to the manifold and see what other turbos match that

Take it to a shop that rebuilds turbos, my old banks was only 800 to have it rebuilt.

the way its sounding is i should find another turbo that i can get parts for that bolts up to my housing
