sludge In fuel tank
so I just got back from Afghanistan from a six month deployment about a week ago. I was excited to see my old truck nicknamed Juggernaut. After messing around with the fuel water separator and checking the fluids I cranked it up and it fired right up. After a few minutes the engine cut out. After checking my clear fuel filter I noticed what looked like a bunch of dead bugs. I cleaned it out and tried again same thing. Because it is my daily driver I did what anyone else would do put half a bottle of diesel clean in and topped off the tank. LOL I drove it back and forth to work (25 miles) and died each trip. Not to bad just cleaned the filter primed the system and it started right up. Then today I dropped the tank (always my luck the tank was full) and strained the fuel with the wifes collender thing. When I looked in the tank I saw about 1/2" of black sludge so I used my pressure washer to clean inside and out and it all came out. I then used a air chuck to blow the lines clean. I replaced the fuel filters and filled the fuel water separator with ATF and ran it for about 15 seconds and shut it down. Tomorrow I will run it for around 15 minutes and put the new separator on. Hopefully this will do the trick. Anyone have an I'dea what the sludge was and how to keep it from coming back? I use diesel kleen every fill up

i think all fuel tanks should have a drain. my tractor has a plug molded in the tank i take out and drain every year. it always has a little junk in the tank. you should be good to go now.:tu:

I sure hope so I did the same thing about a year ago and it was just as bad. I have to be doing something wrong I wouldn't think every diesel tank gets this bad.

it has to be in the fuel settling out
|
do you always fill at the same station?
|
for the most part yes but a few times at other stations if I travel
|
i would try another station. that black sludge is probly dead allge.

i installed a glass inline fuel filter just so i can see what kind of debris if any are working their way inot my injector pump ! since i run veggie oil also ii have not had any problems other than changing the filter element out 3 times, got 3/8 glass filter at o rieleys... dont get the one with the plastic tips get the solid ones . very important to protect the small filter in the injector pump, i had my pump repaired twice in 4 months! but no problems now that i figured everything out
