Cold starting

How cold does it have to be before it is required to plug in the block heater? It was 25 deg this morn truck would not start. I'm sure this thing should start up in temps lower than 25. I had a 240d benz that would not start if it was colder than 40, but it was on it's last leg. I've seen some 12v's start on WMO at 10 deg with only one battery. What is the coldest it can be and my IDI should still start?

I never plug mine in. Will start at any temperature. I suggest replacing the glow plugs and controller. I buy all my gp's and controllers from this site. www.AccurateDiesel.com - Accurate Technical Services, LLC

And the controller? I'm sure it works fine. I'm tight on cash. I'm sure there is a testing procedure for the controller.

CARP 11-18-2011 01:40 PM

I'm not sure of a test procedure. But it sounds like the controller is faulty cause it doesn't keep the plugs lit long enough.

BigRigButters 11-18-2011 01:48 PM

I'll check my plugs. My controller is on a toggle. I know I have left it on before after a couple drives. I probably have a a plug or two out. I will keep the controller in mind.

Your plugs are manual? Then yeah. If you left the switch on for a drive those plugs will get eaten fast.....

backwoodsracing 11-18-2011 11:22 PM

use a push button instead it eliminates leaving them on

DieselCrawler 11-19-2011 11:29 PM

intall a push button or a momentary switch. also if they are on for longer than 10-15 seconds they will burn out. hopefully none of them swelled the tips or yo will in for some fun.

here, read up before attempting.

Or can I get a set from auto zone and expect similar reliability and performance?

I've had my gp's from accurate diesel in my motor for 40,000 miles. Starts at 0 degrees out every time.
