6.9 Been sitting for ten years. Rough Idle. White/Blue smoke
 

Just got an 83 6.9 2wd. It had been sitting for over ten years. I dropped both tanks. Flushed them. Blew the old fuel out of the lines. Got new batteries and put fresh fuel in the old filter and fresh fuel in the tank. Replaced all the o-rings for the return lines. They were leaky. No leaks now. Fires right up. Just misses and blows white/blue smoke. It had once idled with no misses. There was hardly any smoke. I have it running off the rear tank. The switch does not work to run off the front one. I replaced all the hose clamps for the rubber fuel line connections. It seems to have plenty of power. Haven't drove it too much. It's got ten year old tires. Just lots of smoke at idle. I suspect air is getting in the lines.

uhh.. little confused on your issue. whats the question without the story?

if ur asking bout the smoke, probly injection pump/ injectors need help. sitting that long isnt that good for them.

It smokes quite a bit and doesn't seem to idle smooth. What can I do to help the pump and injectors? I've heard transmission fluid would clean them, or do I need to do more? :humm:

you can try it. put on a new fuel filter filled with ATF. let run for 2 mins and shut it down. let it sit overnight then fire it up and let it run for a while.

My 86 sat for 10 years as well. I would suggest filling the fuel filter with some ATF to see if that helps. My truck also smoked quite a bit for the first couple weeks but it eventually quit on it's own. Expect the lift pump and vacumn pump to go out eventually, the rubber diaphragms dont like sitting for that long.

Thanks, for the advice. I will give those things a shot. Do you know If it's possible to rebuild the lift pump and vacuum pump? I imagine it would be just as cheap to buy new parts.

Hows the flowmaster sound on your 86? I got a 40 series flowmaster I was wanting to put on my truck. I wasn't sure if that was correct.

I dont know if they can be rebuilt, the lift pump is pretty cheap to replace though, $20-30. The vacumn pump is another story, usually over $100 for that one.

I did have a 40 series flowmaster, it was much to quiet. I have since straight piped it and like it much better. It's really quiet at idle, and doesn't really start to roar until just past 2k rpm.

Drove it all week. it finally "came to life" after runnin it down the interstate at 75. :yeah: Got an air in the fuel issue now.

Have you bypassed the factory fuel/water separator? It's located on the firewall between the booster and drivers fender, it is notorious for having dry seals and letting air in. Depending on how cold it gets where you live you may not even need it. If water in the fuel is a concern however you can always upgrade to a 7.3 filter head which uses a filter with the separator built in. There is always the aftermarket stuff as well, Racor makes a diesel fuel/water filter for about $50.

Bypassed it yesterday. Fixed it rght up. I found a water separator/ fuel filter/ fuel heater on ebay for $45.
