7.3 on the way out

i got a idi 7.3 with 294xxx on it oil pressures in the shitter its burinin coolant injection systems shot im about to just swap a motor would it be unwise to drop a 6.9 in it if its cheap?

DieselCrawler 09-20-2011 05:54 PM

nope. just put your harness onto the 6.9. you will need to swap glowplugs over, and your alternator and belt setup(assuming you have a serpintine belt) but externally they are the same.

whats the power loss?

DieselCrawler 09-21-2011 04:55 AM

my 86 f250 with 6.9 and the ATS turbo makes 160 hp and 321ftlbs at the wheels.
my 94 f350 with 7.3 and the banks turbo made 154 hp and 318ftlbs at the rear wheels.

just depends on the way the motor is.

stock settings they are only 15 hp apart.

what you think is is the most boost you could run on a 7.3

Spurrit 10-05-2011 12:01 AM

According to the folks @ Banks, 10 lbs. is the most you should run.

4x4manonbroke 10-05-2011 05:10 AM

nothing more than 15 psi MAXXED OUT....ive seen 18 but your beggin for problems.... i would find a 7.3 and go with that .... 6.9's have a tendoncy to cranck heads for no apparent reason

DieselCrawler 10-05-2011 06:25 PM

and 7.3's cavitate for no apparent reason. do what you wish.
