Vacuum Pump

I have a feeling that the bearing has gone out on my vacuum pump on my 7.3 idi, is it rebuildable or do I have to buy a new one. You can watch the pulley and shaft move in an out while the engine is running

pump is shot. either get ones from a junk yard or a new one. you will need a powersteering pulley remover to get the pulley off.

thanks Crawler I was afraid of that answer just thought I'd see if I could rebuild but guess not, neighbor has a couple I may see if he would sell me one. Would that explain my brake pedal not feeling right almost like there is no vacuum??

DieselCrawler 08-21-2011 06:28 PM

yep. no vacuum to the booster. probly hard pedal.

also if u have a/c i bet it doesnt change where it comes out

Well Crawler you have hit it right on the head again, it won't change to the vents it just blows out the floor. Thank you for your help

Had that same problem, remember DC? If memory serves me correct, a new pump didn't cost much but, the pulley puller would not fit. Took it to the local dealership and after they told me that they could not pull it, they finally said that they could for $25 bucks. I told them HELL NO but, they already pulled it. I did not get charged. However, I did buy a new pulley from them for $30 and the pulley press/puller actually fit the new pulley so I installed the new one. I did keep the old one just in case.

Yea a new pump is like 150 but I'm gonna check some junk yards first

Try ebay? I got mine at Advance for under $100.

I just went through that with my 86, parts store didn't have any tools to remove the pulley. Luckily my bro-in-law who is a GM diesel mechanic for the USAF had the right puller in his garage. I'll just start checking with him first from now on.
