About to open the IP on my 7.3 IDI

Hey guys,
I bought a 1989 Ford F250 with the 7.3L IDI non turbo in it a coople of month ago. The owner said the engine makes unusual noises at RPM about 2500 and higher. He supposed a broken valve spring or a worn out hydro. That´s not a big deal....
So I just opened the valve covers and checked each valve spring. Everything´s great. But then, as I Just put in some new gaskets and tried to crank it over, the engine fired 2 or 3 times and then died. I checked the fuses, wires. All ok. Then changed the fuel filter. With open hose to the fuel filter I tried to start it again. Diesel comes out of the line. So the lift pump is ok. Also checked the other side of the filter. So Diesel gets from the Filter to the IP. The return line on top of the IP is quit empty, but when I open the IP cover, I can see Diesel. After that I checked the FSS. I even jumped it with a wire to the battery +
So, electric seems to be working fine. I suppose, that some dirt gets in the fuel line from the filter to the IP, as I opened the valve cover and it is blocking the IP now. Additional, when i crank the engine over a while and then moving quickly to the exhaust, there´s not a kind of white smoke and it doen´t smells like diesel. When I open the fuel line from the IP to the injectors, I can´t recognize any kind of fuel pressure. Only a little bit of diesel standing in the injector.

After this long long story... I suppose I have to open the IP to get it cleaned completely. Is this a good idea? Has anyone got a manual or assembly/disassembly instruction?? Or even another idea, what´s the problem?
I don´t know what I should do next to the IDI to get it running again.

with kind regards

martis

I would not open up this pump unless you were trained to work on them. You can easily have a run away engine if the governer is not set right.

what he said.

Hmmm okay. Thanks for your advice! I thought about to give the IP to a near Bosch station to overhaul it.
Whats about the inlet filter screen in the IP? I just saw it in the repair manual of Haynes Techbook about Ford 7.3 IDI and Chevy 6.2 Diesel. Is it possible to clean this filter?
Thanks

Martis

yea, but to get to it you pretty much have to remove the injection pump.

The IDI is running again!! There was air in the transfer pump of the IP.... stupid failure
