94 IDI Turbo Leaking Oil BAD!!!!!!
 

Good afternoon!

This is my first post to diesel bombers. I recently purchased my first diesel ever. Its a 94 f250 4x4 with a 7.3L IDI Turbo bone stock. After repairing a leaky return line yesterday I noticed the steel oil supply line for the turbo was leaking where the fitting threads onto the turbo. I decided to try and tighten it and when I did instead of tightening it, both the fitting nut and the threads that are part of the turbo rotated as one. I tried to take the line off and they just rotated the other way as one. My line is now leaking really bad so I've parked her in fear of blowing up my turbo. Any recommendations on whats leaking? Am I going to have to rebuild the turbo or is there a simple fix? Thanks! I love the IDI, just wish I had the chance to drive it!

I just fixed this problem myself. Take the fitting apart and use Teflon tape on the end that goes into the turbo. Then if you can get the "plastic wedding band" off replace it, if not put a small o-ring on it between the "wedding band" and the flare at the end and reassemble.

DO NOT USE TEFLON ON HIGH HEAT ITEMS ...... :argh::argh::argh:


Take the fitting and line off ... replace them and use a little smear of Anti-seize on the oil line threads.

I do these verry often ... if you use teflon tape you run the risk of some of the tape comming off inside the turbo .. bad idea :td:..

replace the oil feed line and the turbo feed fitting ... should be able to go to a hydraulic shop and get both the fitting and the line made ... even if it is stainless and no hard line ... make sure to route the line away from something that it will rub or get burnt on ... as the stainless oil lines contain nylon ... also .. do not kink these lines as it will fail in that exact spot soon ... ( as thats my experience ) ..

I guess I should have mentioned my fix was temporary as I was about 70 miles from anything on the side of the road with a full valley pan and a nearly empty oil pan. I babied it back to civilization and had a hose made. I could not see the date of the post on my phone and thought he was in a jam like I was. My bad. No don't use Teflon tape on that stuff. You are very correct. Buuuuut when you are in a jam......... :}

I hear that ... i have had to arrange many things that shouldnt have not worked ... but it did ... :yeah:
