Oil Leak

I noticed oil leaking pretty badly from the top of the oil filter. I needed an oil change any way so I changed it. In the process, I made sure that there wasn't an old o-ring from a previous filter stuck there. There wasn't. So any way, I finished the oil change, fired it up and let it run for a few mins, and killed it. I looked down there again and there is still oil leaking. Bare in mind, I did snug up the filter but, I didn't crank it on there. Any idea what may be causing this? Last filter was a Fram. New one is a Wix.

Mine looked like that when I did my first oil change on my truck after I bought it. After changing it looked like it was still leaking. Later I figured out my driver's side valve cover gasket is leaking and running down the side of the block then down the filter.

I'm glad you said that. I have noticed the same thing on this truck. ( A leak around the valve cover.) It just looked like to me that there is a leak around the filter.

Thanks FordDZLMan.

P.S. Here's a beer for ya'!:c:

You're welcome and thank you! :c: haha

What brand of oil are you running? Are you having to put quite a bit of oil in between changes? I put the Shell Rotella in when I changed mine and noticed its leaking quite a bit of it. Its getting close to time to change it again for me so I thought I'd try the Chevron Delo to see if the truck likes it better.

I read recently that Brand A might leak out more than Brand B or Brand C and you just need to try different brands to see what your truck likes best.

Something that should be a different post, maybe, but when I change the valve cover gaskets, would it hurt to put a little neverseize on them to help keep them from being cooked on or is that a bad idea? Just wondering because in pipefitting, I know a lot of fitters that put it on flange gaskets for that reason. I know that a motor it totally different from that though.

I probably wouldn't, but I don't know if it would hurt the gasket or not. Hopefully we can get someone else to get you an answer for that because I have no clue.

alot put them on dry, some spray adheisive on them, others use the yellow weatherstrip adhesive. all work, just matters how easy u want them to come off next time.

I'm running Rotella. Previous owner said that is what he ran in it. Next time I may try Delo. D.C., just don't want to have to scrape gasket material off if I have to change them again.

If you are lucky it will be a valve cover gasket. The oil filter attaches to the end of the oil cooler and that gasket can leak as well. It's just a bigger PITA to remove, and if you have to remove it, you may as well rebuild it. The gaskets are cheap, but the O-rings are spendy.

Thanks Sycostang. I will look in to that too. I do see oil coming from the top of the motor though by the valve covers. But like I said, I will check the oil cooler too.:c:
