94 turbo on a 89

can you put a 1994 7.3l idi with turbo take the turbo and intake hat and put it on a 1989 7.3l idi? and if so how do u take the turbo off the 94 ?:w2:

FordDZLMan9191 08-26-2010 09:59 AM

It will fit, but I think you need more than just the turbo and intake hat. I can't help with how to take it off since I've never done it. Someone should chime in that knows what to do though.

cowboyford16 08-26-2010 10:15 AM

everything will bolt on. You need oil feed line to the turbo, and a blow by canister. So you have to have the driver side valve cover. And for the turbo you just un bolt the Y pipe the down pipe the pedistal for the Up pipes and diconnet your heat shield and oil feed line and your ready to put it all on.

DieselCrawler 08-26-2010 12:11 PM

yea, u need up pipes, down pipe, oil return line, oil feed line, snail shell intake, turbo, driveisde valve cover, and air cleaner assy. bolts on pretty easy. took me about 5 hrs total doing it myself.

i have a 94 turbo on my 86.

fravelj 08-26-2010 01:43 PM

thanks everyone yall really helped me out :c: what all do i need of the 94 ? like manifold value cover exc

DieselCrawler 08-26-2010 02:33 PM

i listed everything u need in my prevoius post.

fravelj 08-26-2010 03:03 PM

do i need the manifolds?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

hows urs run since u put it on there? and does it blow smoke?

DieselCrawler 08-26-2010 03:56 PM

no, the uppipe bolts to the original manifolds.

mine runs good. only a haze of smoke when stomping on it.

fravelj 08-26-2010 04:03 PM

was it easy to get everything off the 94? and where does the uppipes bolt to the manifold at?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

can u tell the difference? and can u hear the turbo like at the exhaust pipe?

DieselCrawler 08-26-2010 05:56 PM

i hear my turbo loud. whistles pretty good.
yes i can tell difference. mine is a play toy, so not to much road travel. but in the mud it spins second high prey good now with my 3.54 gears and 36's.

spray up all the exhaust bolts with pb before removing, other than that it comes out pretty easy. hard part is reinstalling. fun to line everything up yourself.

fravelj 08-26-2010 06:52 PM

everything lines up on the engine good? thanks man

DieselCrawler 08-26-2010 08:31 PM

the 7.3 idi is the same externally as a 6.9

fravelj 08-27-2010 12:30 PM

how does the intake hat (snail shell intake) bolt on?

DieselCrawler 08-27-2010 01:16 PM

yea. one bolt threw the middle.

fravelj 09-18-2010 06:42 AM

whats the wire that plugs into the middle of the turbo?

DieselCrawler 09-18-2010 09:35 AM

oil pressure sender.

fravelj 09-18-2010 11:15 PM

how long did it take u to put everything on?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i got it all off except for the pipe underneth that comes from the driverside that hooks up to the up pipe but i believe i can get it tomrrow thanks for your help man:c:

DieselCrawler 09-19-2010 09:26 AM

about 5 hrs by myself and i am a diesel mechanic.

fravelj 09-20-2010 01:39 PM

was it easy?

DieselCrawler 09-20-2010 01:42 PM

ehh. hardest part by yourself is gettin the uppipes and down pipes mounted.

fravelj 09-20-2010 02:08 PM

yeah u had to custom make ur tail pipe coming off the downpipe i have to

DieselCrawler 09-20-2010 04:31 PM

yea, i bought an adapter to hook my downpipe to the original pipe.

fravelj 09-26-2010 09:26 PM

i got it on i have to redo the clamp where the downfall pipe is cus its leaking and i didnt get the clamp on good enough cus exhaust fumes comes in the cab but my turbo i put on isnt very loud i can hear it but its not real loud

builtFORDtough22 09-27-2010 01:01 AM

about how much does a project like that cost? thinking about doing that too on my 1990 7.3 and would a turbo from a 7.3 powerstroke work? like a 97?

DieselCrawler 09-27-2010 06:23 AM

with custom enginneering yes. will it bolt on, no. a used turbo setup for an idi can be found for 800-1000, or less if u get a good deal. new they are 1800-2400. banks, ats and hypermax sell turbo kits.

builtFORDtough22 09-27-2010 10:08 AM

which would be the best way to go? and where would i find one used? how about a turbo off a stock 94? would it make much of a difference or is that a waste of time

DieselCrawler 09-27-2010 10:17 AM

if the 94 is an idi, it will bolt right on. that is the setup i am running. the stock idi turbo is made by ats.

find used ones on ebay, craigslist or junkyards. i found mine in a junk yard.

6.9 7.3 turbo kit ats f250 diesel gauge pipe airbox : eBay Motors (item 220673196302 end time Sep-29-10 17:33:31 PDT)

builtFORDtough22 09-27-2010 10:19 AM

how much of a difference did it make on your truck? well worth the time and money?

DieselCrawler 09-27-2010 10:45 AM

for a daily driver ehh. maybe. if towing alot yes. i wheel with mine, not much road use and no towing other than the sled pulls i do every now and then. big different in mud. can hold rpms spinnin tires now in 3rd gear high range in mud.

gave it enough power to break parts.

:rocking:

DieselCrawler 09-28-2010 10:43 PM
