Building a 6.9 to kill

Guys,

Newbie to the Bombers. I am also a member on the "other" site.

Just to preface where I am going let me tell you about my last truck. 2001 Dodge w/13mm Schied pump, twin setup S300 and S480 and on and on and on.....made a little over 900hp. You can see the truck in Diesel Power mag from last Nov getting its pump installed.

So, I am not a stranger to going a little overboard on a diesel. I had been reading and reading and reading and I finally settled on purchasing an 86 F250 IDI, she is running 4.10's and a T-19 tranny. Most importantly, with a 6.9 V-8 diesel.

So lets get into it. I am going to have a cam ground, the grind is going to lean towards horsepower at higher RPM from 2000-4500 is the sweet spot. I want to have a lot of lift, enough lift to require me to cut valve reliefs in the pistons. I havent picked who's pistons to run yet, obviously I will be going with forged ceramics. I am going to port and polish the heads as much as can safely be done and stud them. I have a plan for making my own intake. Turbos will definitely be coming in 2's.

What I am interested in hearing, which I haven't found in the forums here, is to what extremes people have built this motor. I am interested in finding a stroker crank for it. I know the Navistar started life as a gasser and have a feeling that there are some cranks out there I could swap in. I am also curious to find out what are the maxx cc's that can be had from the DB2 IP, that kinda starts everything from cam grind to turbo sizing.

Anything would be great guys, thanks.

the 6.9 did not start out life as a gasser.

heres some info.
International 6.9L Engine - Diesel Power Magazine

mel over on oilburners makes the best pump and injectors u can buy for the idi fords. the highest numbers i have seen so far are around 350 hp. he is also over there too. has dyno charts with the Moose pump installed.

no stroker cranks, nothing really aftermarket. another fellow over at oilburners custom girnds the cams for 180 bucks i belive.

:hi: And :google: But :welcome2: Fire away and see what we say. I would like to get a 6.9L IDI or 7.3L IDI some time good luck with the build. And no the 6.9L did not start out as a GASSER. it was a new engine all by its self.

Think idi can't make big horsepower?Back in the early 1990s, max Lagod of Hypermax put together an extraordinary engine package for a customer yearning to compete in sled pulling. With nothing holding him back, Lagod designed a 7.3L that included two Garrett turbos (which were state-of-the-art then but probably not manufactured anymore), a Bosch inline P-pump, custom injectors, a fabricated intake and exhaust manifolds, and slight cylinder head work.

Surprisingly, much of the factory engine components were retained, such as the crankshaft, block, and pistons-although the connecting rods were heat-treated. Compression on the engine was 15:1, which called for ether-assisted startups. Soon after entering this wild IDI into area-sanctioned sled pulling events, the engine was banned. Not to be discouraged, the owner turned to drag racing. Rumor has it that the truck graced with this 7.3L beast put out 1,200 hp and ran quarter-mile times in the 9-second range!

All of that power came with a price though, as the engine was infamous for its unreliability. Apparently, the engine block flexed so much on several occasions that the rear of the engine block broke off and required the utilization of rubber freeze plugs!

Text from the Diesel Power article, pics have been on my computer so long I dont know where I got them

I've heard about that truck but never saw it but I believed it was truck hats off to that fella

I used to have a video of the DPS truck pulling, it was supposed to be around 700 horse I guess. Dunno what ever happened to it.
