oil burning

Hi guys,
I just got my first diesel. It's a 1990 Ford F 350 7.3 turbo diesel. I drove it home, and in the 60 mile drive, she burned 1 gallon of oil. no black smoke, just white. no power loss. Any ideas on what to check?
Thanks!

How/when did you check the oil? These motors need to have the oil checked when hot. Run the motor to operating temp, then let it sit for 10 minutes then check the dipstick.

I checked the oil before leaving with it, then topped it off when I stopped for fuel. the motor was hot. I then checked it when I got home. It took 4 litres to bring it back up to the full level. My brother gave me a ride up to get the truck, and said the the smell/smoke of burning oil was so bad he could not follow me home for more than 10 minutes.

I would check the CDR, see if the diaphragm has ruptured. It's the object shaped like a tuna can that might be mounted on your driver side valve cover. There is a small hole on one side, blow into the hole and if you feel air come out one of the big holes then the CDR is bad. If it tests good, soak it in some gasoline for a bit to clean it out. Don't use compressed air to dry it, let it air dry on it's own.

also check turbo play. could be going past turbo into intake of motor.

Thanks for the ideas. CDR is good, turbo has a very small amount of play. How much (if any) is OK?
I read on another thread about a RDT. How would I go about trying that? does anyone have pics of how to do it?
Thanks again!

the RDT replaces the cdr valve. remove cdr vavle, find a oil restitant hose or platic/metal tube that fits good into the cdr's hole and just run it down the side of engine. will have oil fumes and possibly oil also coming out of tube if engine is worn
