Does it need to be warmed in the summer even?

It depends on the ambient temps where you live but most time it needs heated

New here but...

I am down on the Texas coast and have been running alt fuels in my IDI's for years (way back before it was cool). IMHO it is a requirment that you have an aux (my is mounted in the bed) fuel tank and that the alt fuels only go in that tank. That way if there is an issue with the fuel then you can switch to your factory tanks which should contain diesel and continue to drive.
As for the fuels I run anything that will burn, period. For me it comes down to a question of value. For example I can get 150 gallons in the bed of my current runner. So 150 x $3.00 is $450. Even if I explode the IP I am money ahead (IP on ebay $325 free shipping).

Now to be honest I have not blown anything up but the possiblity always exists when you start blending your own fuels.

So, I am sensitive to weather forcasts. If it is going to get cold or if where I am going is cold I will adjust the fuel blend so that I have a lighter mixture. Vegetable oil is the big offender here. If it clouds in the tank it will not want to pump. Waste petro lubes are another matter. For the most part (unless you live where it gets really cold) I just cut the oils with a real fuel like diesel, kerosene, JetA and even dead gas.

You do need to have some sensitivty to what your motor sounds like with regular fuels so that you can get a feel for blending. It is the clacking sound that I listen and adjust for.

All that being said blending fuels is not for everybody.

I have found that most folks have discarded the IDI's and consider them to not have any value. Which is why I have 2 spare motors in the shop. It is cheaper for me to find a running engine that it is to buy a complete gasket set.

Who would have thunk it?
