de problemo

Hello agian.

My problem with this 7.3 idi (it has 103,000 miles) is that when I try to maintain a highway speed (50-60 mhp)going up a steep hill the engine loses power, starts to miss and make that pinpng sound.
Then it down shifts (automatic trans). The engine strains very hard to climb the grade, I'm down to 35-40 mph now w/cars trying to pass, Very annouying and almost dangerous.
Then engine does'nt smoke when this happens. It seems engine is starving of fuel. It has new fuel filter.
Is it bad fuel (low cetene)?
Fuel pump timing?
Bad fuel injectors? (not sure how old they are)
ALL THE ABOVE?..lol
In town driving it runs like a champ except when I excellorate a little harder than normal
then it pings/misses a little.

Another question:
How in the world dose this 7.3L exhale through a single 2-1/4" exhaust pipe?
Could this be part of the prolem?

would very much appreciate any help.
SB

OOPS! sorry, new here hope I did'nt interrupt a thread

Sounds like several possable issues.... do open up that damn exhaust that will help a ton... go to 3" or better at the y pipe and make it big....
on the popping and such .... sounds like your lacking fuel pressure from the pump.... i would check your fuel screw to make sure it hasnt backed out...(to the left will increase fuel , to the right will reduce fuel).
It sounds like lack of fuel either from Injection Pump of lack of pressure from the lift pump to IP...... causing it to starve for fuel......I would not advise driving much till ya figure this out you could cause a piston to melt due to lack of fuel and a leak condition

seems like it runs ok at low rpm's ...... has just enough fuel pressupe to support low rpm rolling.....
Have you been timing the enging at all ???? that could be a issue as well... unless you have never touched it, and was running fine before..... was this a sudden on set symptom ???
need more info to help i will keep in touch till we figure this out......
i live in washington state...... i am mobile mechanic.... maybe i can come help.... if not too far away .....?????? always an idea
:rocking:

it isnt to bad. those pictures were with nothing removed. and i even had my turbo on by then, which clogs up the engine bay even more. i have never had to remove anything else.

Man ! im having the same problem shortestbus is having....runs good in the flats but going up the Cajon Pass and tehachappi I was getting passed by trucks pulling trailers ! it finally sputtered and quit running and I had to have it towed to a mechanic shop in Pacoima.
I just had a new Injector Pump put in it two months ago and it was running fine.
with 262,000 could it be the glow plugs or injectors themselves?
It doesnt smoke at all !
I really dig this truck but it is eating away at my finances steadily and wife is getting Pi^%#@!* D off. are there booster pumps in the 94 IDI stock tanks I did not check to see if it would run on the other tank and the batteries died after only about 6 0r 8 crankovers,:argh:

I have a 91 F-350 dually with a ZF 5 speed, doesn't smoke when I accelerate or when I am pulling uphill with my jeep on the trailer, a bit anemic but it does the job, How much would it kill the fuel milage to turn the pump up a 1/4 turn???? And what should I be expecting for fuel milage with it as I would assume is stock???? I am averaging right around 12.5 -14 MPG driving just back and forth to work (32 miles round trip) and around 10-11 pulling a 4k lb jeep on a car hauler. I just put a 2.5" inlet 2.5" outlet Thrush welded muffler and pipe all the way out back also.

1/4 turn will be to much for a NA motor. before even thinking of turning it up u need to get a pyro. big item because you tow. a stock idi can run around 1000-1100 degrees exhaust temps.

jeepnxj96 01-08-2012 12:51 PM

How do you know if it has been turned up or not???

DieselCrawler 01-08-2012 06:29 PM

the triangle cover has 2 screws on it. on one of them screws will be a anti tamper device. most of the time it is a hard red plastic on the screw head. if you remove the screw the plastic breaks off.if you look at the pics i posted, you can see the red on the pump.
