92 F350 Loosing headlights randomly

My 92 f350 crew cab is randomly loosing headlights going down the road. It acts like someone is sitting pulling the headlight switch in and out really fast and then shuts them out completely. When it does this the voltage gauge reads higher than normal. The running lights arent affected at all while this is goin on. Ive replaced the alternator, batteries, voltage regulator. checked the grounds nothing. :argh: Im wondering if the turnsignal switch could be going bad? The washers only work in the high beam position then dont stop squirting or wiping till you turn the key off. And the delay function dont work. Since the dimmer is built all in one i was kinda thinking all these things are caused by maybe a bad switch. What do you guys think?:humm: Thanks Dave

By the way it sounds, imma thinking its the dimmer switch, i'm currently looking at teh ford mechanics dealerships website, and the only thing that they all have in common is the dimmer switch. thats where i would start:humm:

Yes, sounds like your multifunction switch ("wipers, blinkers, brights" switch) in the steering column needs to be replaced. This is pretty common for the '90's model Fords. I've had to replace mine twice already since I've had the truck, both times when it was doing the same thing you are describing. Also check the connection on it to make sure nothing is corroded when you put a new one in.

The multifunction switch does sound like it's toast. If you get a replacement and it's a borg-warner unit, test it in the truck before you reassemble the column. I replaced my switch recently and the first 2 I got were even worse than the one I replaced. The headlight flickering sounds like a bad headlight switch though, when the switch gets old the power draw begins tripping the internal circuit breaker resulting in the flickering you see. I would still do the multi switch first, just in case since it obviously has other issues as well.

wipers fixed now still no luck with the headlights

OKay well im i feel really stupid now after replacing the switch i turn it on and nothing the wipers are still acting up. :humm: I get out and start crawing under the hood tracing wires and put my hand on the wiring going to the wiper motor and the pulg falls off the motor :argh: so i hook it back up and magically the works now. :jump: i just gotta figure out the headlights flashing. I pulled the headlight switch and replaced it with another one i have to see if that works.

Okay im trying to check all the wires going to the headlights how in the hell do i take and get the headight buckets out let alone get that stupid chome bezel off of my headlight. this thing is tickin me off. Both of my corner lights nest to the headlight itself are burnt out and or not working trying to figure out how to remove the whole headlight assembly to clean and check wires. Please help :scare2:

The chrome trim, turn signal and corner light come out as an assembly. It is held on by 2 screws on top and 2 11mm nuts that are accessed from the engine compartment. The nuts are easier to reach if you remove the batteries. That will allow you access to the headlight assemblies and to change your burnt out bulbs.

Okay this is gonna sound stupid but i pulled the battery trays and dont see any nuts on the back side but reaching up between the core support and the plastic liner that the headlights mount to i think i felt a nut sticking trough is that the ones your talking about? I had to reach up from under the bumper and barely fit my hand up in there.

Sycostang67 02-24-2010 08:21 AM

No, I dont think it's possible to reach these from up under the bumper. They are sticking out, pointing at the firewall. They are pretty hard to see, even with the batteries out of the way, I usually have to feel around for them.

Thanks i got it figured out today in the day light. I got them out now i gotta find where they sell the little metal clips that hold the headlight adjusters in place i broke.
