Blue smoke need help.
 
I just picked up a 90 F350 crew cab that has an auto trans and 4wheel drive with a 6" lift. It also has a Banks sidewinder turbo w/ the trans command and the complete Banks exhaust. Couldn't pass it up. Got it cheap, but heres the problem. It blows a blueish white smoke out the tailpipe always. Less at idle more at speed. Its burning oil I know but I can't figure out from where or how. I've looked through all of the threads here and came across some good info and some things to check, but all have been ok. Heres what I've checked. CDR, I've replaced the injector return lines, transfer pump on the block. I'd like to run a compression test but I'm new to diesels and have to experince with them. Can anyone help and is there some other things I should be looking at? Could it be just the rings?, the valves?, or maybe the pickup in the tank?, or maybe the turbo has a bad seal? Any other ideas would help. I have another motor but I would rather not pull this one out if I didn't have to. The motor runs smooth, no missing or rough idling, and has lots of power.

could be turbo seals are starting to go, also could be valve seals/rings. i know from the factory IH never put exhaust valve seals on. u can install them, i did and most ov my oil consumption went away.

Thanks for the tip. I pulled off the intake to the turbo, CDR, and the housing from the turbo to the intake of the motor and found oil. At first thought I was sure the turbo seals were wasted. I wiped out what I could reach and ran the motor. After running it the turbo blew out the rest and the white smoke seemed to be less. So I reinstalled all pieces and ran it agian. I noticed the smoke had become thicker again. I then took everything a part and again I found oil in the turbo. So my next question is what is the function of the CDR. Is it to stop oil from the crankcase? I tried to blow in the pin hole and couldn't so it should be good? I ran the motor again and smoke has thinned out but still there. Any other ideas?

My CDR served the purpose of dumping mass quantites of oil into my intake causing runaway :argh: I thought with the Banks system it was deleted?

No on this sidewinder kit it's located between the air filter and the turbo. I am going to order a new CDR tomorrow and see what happens. Hopefully the smoke will be from the left over oil in the block.

I always find oil in the hose between the CDR and intake, but my truck doesn't smoke. The CDR has a diaphragm inside it, and when the engine starts sucking harder, it pulls the diaphragm closed to prevent ingesting copious amounts of oil. I do like how some of the banks systems run that hose to the gear cover housing instead of the intake.

I've never heard of an "RDT". What is it? Where can I get a hold of one, and what does it do?

RDT-road draft tube. instead of crankcase vapors gettin rentered into the intake, it just dumps em into the enviroment. make it yourself, run hose long enough so the bottom of the truck doesnt get covered in oil.
