7.3 injector pump
A friend has a 89 7.3 starts fine but after it warmes up and you kill it if you crank it right back up it will start but if it sits for a half hour or so it will just spin not even trying to crank he read somewhere that if you poured water on the pump it would start he did it and it cranks right up also if you push start it it will start right up so does that mean the pump is bad???

well pouring cold water onto a hot aluminum injection pump with very tight tolerances is not a good idea, so since it was done yes the pump will need to be replaced.
the housing will warp a little bit and throw specs out inside the pump. |
so the injector pump is wearing out?? or is something else causing it to not start when it is warmed up?
|
pump is warped. when the aluminum gets warm, it goes out of spec and can not pump correctly.
one major issue with these pumps. cannot wash or heavy doses of water when warm. |
My truck did the same thing...replaced the injector pump and they also checked the lift pump and found that it was a bit low on pressure so replaced it as well. Truck now runs better than ever.

Dieselcrawler is right, when the pump starts to wear it will have tight enough clearance when cold, but once hot the wear plus expansion gets clearance out too far.

got the rebuilt injector pump from penscola diesel put it on fired up the truck and the idol is high had to take the cold idol bracket completly off and the idol screw is backed all the way out where the spring and screw is loose to get 650 rpm the injector pump gear didnt move when replacing the pump and the timing marks are lined up on the pump and the housing any ideas
