replacing my cab

hi all i need to replace my cab on my truck the floors are all rotted out and i was wondering if it is something a 17 year old engeneering student could do. i know there has gotta be a lot of wireing in there. but my concern is how to get the new cab on the frame i don't have a forklift or anything like that and my garadge is too low to do a chain hoist. if any one has any tips or precaustions or ideas please let me know thanks tim

Can use some bottle jacks and blocks to lift and support while you pull the frame out from under it.

Can't you get repro floor pans for your truck?

Hmm strange this comes up. I just got a 93 that needs the same thing. I planned on using 4x4 wood post, several cinder blocks, and 48 inch high lift jacks. From what I have looked at there isn't a whole lot of wiring. Your truck should be even easier then mine. You should be able to pull all the wiring related to the engine and just set it all on top of the engine then lift the cab off with the cab wiring still in place. If something isn't the same between the 2 cabs you will have then you will just have to pull the parts from the old cab and put on the new cab.

Ok to elaborate on cab removal. You will have to unbolt everything and get the cab where it is just sitting on the frame. Hopefully you can take a board and run it on each side of the cab from the back to under the saddle. then you will want to lift until you can run a board at the front and back from one side to the other. You will have to just keep stacking blocks until you can move the truck out from under the cab. Once you have jacked up high enough you will set the board down on your stack of blocks. Boards should be 8 feet long and the truck should only be about 6 to 6.5 feet wide. I have 2 high lift jacks so I should be able to go up with the front 8 inches at a time then raise the back 8 inches and just keep working up. Just do everything slowly to be safe and make sure everything is secure. It won't be a few hours of work but more like 2 to 5 long days by your self and if someone is helping that has never done it before it won't shorten the time much. Good luck. If you do it make a write up on it for everyone else.

that is a good idea with the jacks and lifting it up a little at a time i'm just worried about how to raise up the new one off a trailer i was thinking mabey get a bunch of buddies over and lift it up then set it on top of some cinder blocks but i don't know how much it weighs. and i was looing at it how hard it is to unhook all the stuff like steering and stuff i 'm kinda worried about taking on a big job like this. thanks alot tim.
:humm:

i think you will strugle to lift it off by hand even with a lot of help check around and see if you can borrow or rent an a frame lift i would let you use mine if we were closer. as far as the job its self it shouldnt be that bad just mark all your wires on both cabs take close up pics of things you think you might forget and lit it slow so you dont tear anything up on accident. I have done a couple and Im not that bright lol you can do it.

Coming off a trailer shoudl be easy. Use the same process with boards under it on blocks and pull the trailer out of the way. You can use a floor jack on the deck of the trailer to get the cab up high enough to get boards under it... or just set it on the boards to start with.
