head bolt torque specs

hey all im new to the diesel world and i was wondering if any one had the max head blt torque specs for the 7.3 idi turbo diesel on 1 motor and my other turbo diesel is makin a knockin sound intermittenly and issing every so often but has all the power in the world ... i thought it was the rockerarms so i re torqued them to 27ft.lbs. which is factory but didnt clear up the problem .. chacked the mains and rod bearings and still nothing any info on both would be helpful ....im a mechanic but only on gassers so dont hate a newbie

evidently noone knows ... or is having trouble like me finding the information

:humm: pop your injector lines loose one at a time and see what cylinder is missing

some one has to have the torque specs for the heads...

the torque specs for the 7.3 turbo are as follows: 1st 65, 2nd 90, 3rd 110, and 4th 110. This is done in Four steps because it needs to stretch the bolts out, by doing this it creates a more even clamping force on the head gasket.

also how many miles are on the truck and fuel system(ip, injectors etc) this could also be another source of the problem, if you haven't done so alreay I would install a clear fuel return line from the ip to see if you have any bubbles in the system.

would that cause the knockin sound i am hearing though .. as for miles it has 192000 on it , i pulled all injectors and all seem to be about the same opening pressure and all the tips are there ... nozzles are clean and when it started missing it made a hard clunk like metal on metal for about 3 min. then stopped but still missed ,, checked turbo and everything i can think of but still nothing .. was wondering if i might have blown the top off the piston or have a lifter going bad . b/c its on the right side near the head not low in the block and somewhere between the rear 2 cylinders

did you do the over head on it, i know you said you retorqued the rocker arms but did you adjust the valves

The Dom 07-03-2009 11:37 PM

valves are non adjustable

stkdram55 07-03-2009 11:39 PM

:D ok, im gonna go back to the dodge forums now...but it does sound like its coming from the valve train the way you described it

The Dom 07-03-2009 11:41 PM

thats kinda what i thought , but i cant tell b/c its a damn ford and really clattery , junk fords anyway
lol

The knocking you are could possibly be the truck is out of time. As the IP gets older and get worn the timing on the motor get all out of whack. I would try and find a reputable diesel shop that can time it for you.

Also I would have the injectors pop tested IIRC the correct pressure required for the turbo is around 1950 psi. But I am not sure so I'd double check if I were you

The Dom 07-03-2009 11:45 PM

hmmm ok i will try that and see what i come up with... i think i can pull the timing cover off and check the timing gears ,,, like i said im new to diesels but i think there are triangles on the timing gears and on the ip and oil pump but im not real sure
