Needing help bought my grandfather in-laws truck have a feeling it may be injector pump he had a new one put in by ford it will go to turn over and you can here it wants to start it started one time for me and my husband but stalled after 30 secs to 1 min have checked to make sure there is no air in the lines
My husband has a 96 7.3 powerstroke so he hasn't had to deal with in the injector pump issues but with research I saw if the glow plugs are bad it will have trouble starting so if all the glow plugs are bad will it be causing this or is just the injector pump you can tell it wants to turn over and run but something is just not letting it

 

The thing is the engine will usually start fine with two or three dead glow plugs... but after a couple more die, you're past the tipping point and it may not start anymore. Doesn't really matter if its a IDI or PSD engine... or an old Chevy 6.2L diesel.

Make sure you're glowplugs are working (multimeter ohm test). If they're not getting power, you may have a controller issue. That's usually when I wire up a pushbutton and solenoid for manual control.

On the IDI, if two or more of the glowplugs don't work then the entire system won't work. When you key on do you hear a single loud click (relay closing) and the Wait to start light illuminates for about ten seconds? Or do you hear a constant click click click with no illuminated light? If the former then your glow plugs are functioning (unless theres something really weird) if not then they aren't, could be a couple bad plugs, bad relay, or bad controller.

The controller is resistance driven, so if it sees resistance outside of its expected range it won't fire the plugs.



As for the stalling after it started, there is a common issue with older IDIs where air is allowed to enter the fuel lines via worn seals, this allows fuel to drain back down to the tank. The truck will start for a few seconds then die when it runs out of fuel. The engine has to be turning for the fuel pump to do its thing. Generally this takes some time to happen, so if you get it running and drive for a bit, stop for gas, then it'll start right up, leave it parked overnight and it will start and die again.

 

The hard lines that run from the lift pump to the filter housing and the filer housing to th IP have goofy seals on them. They are known to leak and cause problems.
