94 7.3 IDI SURGING
 
I WENT THROUGH THE O-RINGS AGAIN AND REPLACED JUST THE O-RINGS WITH SOME GREESE ON THEM. SINCE ALL OTHER THINGS (CAPS AND HOSES) WERE NEW. I ALSO INSTALLED A BOOST GAUGE WHILE I WAS AT IT, JUST UNDID PLUG ON TOP OF INTAKE HORN AND INSTALLED THE LINE THERE. THE MAIN LINE TO THE IP WAS A LITTLE LOOSE SO I SNUGGED IT UP. I HAVE 1/4 TANK IN THE TRUCK AND IT RAN FINE BEFORE THIS PROCESS AND NOW IT STARTS RIGHT UP THEN I GIVE HER A LITTLE THROTTLE AND IT REVS TO 2000 HOLDS FOR ABOUT 2 SECS THEN ALMOST DIES THEN BACK TO NORMAL IDLE.:nope: I BLED THE INJECTOR LINES ALSO AND FUEL FILTER ONLY HAS 1000 MILES ON IT. ANY IDEAS ON THIS I HAVE A REBUILT IP ON HAND BUT WAITING TO INSTALL IT TILL I NEED TO. (MAYBE NOW IS THE TIME HUH?):bat: THANKS,

UPDATE

OK SO I DROPPED THE TANK THIS MORNING AND TOOK OUT THE SENDING UNIT. REPLACED THE CUP ON THE BOTTOM WITH SOME LONGER FUEL HOSE CUT IT AT AN ANGLE SO IT WONT SUCK TO THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK. STILL SAME ISSUE WITH IT SURGING. ALSO SPRAYED IP LINES AND RETURN LINES AND WERE I INSTALLED THE BOOST LINE WITH STARTING FLUID TO SEE IF IT WOULD REV UP AND NO CHANGE

OK JUST SPENT THIS AFTERNOON SWAPING OUT MY IP AND GOT IT FIRED UP AND I THINK THE TIMING ON THIS PUMP IS DIFFERENT ITS A REBUILT ONE I WILL LOOK FOR A THREAD ON TIMING TH IP ITS RUNNING ROUGH AT IDLE AND MISSING WHEN THROTTLED

I would #1 adjust Waste gate if you have one, then adjust pump to turbo smoke ( in order to get rid of most of it ) ...

OK SO I TUNED THE PUMP 2 FLATS AND ADJUSTED THE WASTE GATE 7 TURNS IN. I DID TAKE IT OFF TO TURN IT IN. I DROVE IT AND RUNS BETTER.

BUT MY HOSE I PUT IN THE TANK MUST HAVE PICKED UP SOME STUFF SO I WILL BE PULLING IT AGAIN TOMORROW AND REDOING IT TRY TO MAKE A SCREEN TO FIT THE HOSE. :nope:

WHEN IT WAS GOING HAD POWER THEN FUEL FILTER LIGHT CAME ON AND CHUG CHUG:bat: GOING TO PARK IT IN THE GARAGE TONIGHT BEEN WORKIN WITH HOT PARTS ALL DAY. WILL START AGAIN TOMORROW WHAT A WAY TO SPEND MEMORIAL WEEKEND.:c:

No problem... try putting an old nylon over the pick up .. it will keep out small junk ... or use larger pick up to a 30 mircon filter ( like a 14" tall 8" wide filter that will have easy flow through), and then your ,ain filter wont have to work as hard at filtering junk .. this is what I have done ,, the main filter is a bio0glass brand ( 5 Micron ) then through the original filter housing to IP ... never gets changed anymore due to the first filter being so much more efficent ( and cheep ) .. think its like 7 bucks

WHAT I HAVE DONE BEFORE ON GASSERS IS I GOT A WHOLE BUNCH OF SPRINKLER FILTERS THERE SMALL FOR THE POP UP ONES. I PUSH THEM INTO THE HOSE AND CLAMP THEM AND THE KEEP ALL THE CRUDE OUT AND BUT I DONT HAVE ANY MORE THEY SAT FOR TO LONG AND GOT ALL WEATHERED NOW THEY JUST FALL APART DONT KNOW IF THEY WOULD HOLD UP TO DIESEL THEY ARE PLASTIC..........BUT......WHO KNOWS.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PICS OF HOW YOU DID YOURS I CANT QUITE PICTURE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. I AM PICTURING THE SOCKS THAT YOU WOULD USE FOR LIKE FILTERING VEGGIE OIL FOR BIO DIESELS, AM I CORRECT? :humm:

ALSO THIS ENGINE HAS THE BB CODE INJECTORS AND THE GARRETT A/R 70 STOCK DOWN PIPE I REALLY NEED TO JUST BUILD ONE I HAVE THE PIPE LAYING AROUND JUST WANT TO GET IT RUNNING DECENT FUEL ISSUES WISE BEFORE I GO TO HOG WILD. ANY PROS AND CONS TO THESE. I HAVE SEEN THAT THE BB INJECTORS ARE MENTIONED ALOT, AND HAVE NOT SEEN ANYTHING REALLY ON THIS TURBO.

MY DODGE 1ST GEN CUMMINS HAD A H1C TURBO AND MAN I GOT THAT THING TO MAKE 32PSI BOOST SUCH A FUN TRUCK BUT WAS TIRED OF REBUILDING THE TRANS. AND I GOT IT THERE WITHOUT A TON OF MONEY! ARE THESE TRUCKS CAPABLE OF KEEPING UP WITH THOSE OLD DIESELS?

I WILL JUST KEEP DIGGING ON HERE FOR ALL THE STUFF ABOUT THESE TRUCKS THANKS,:c:

The wrist pins on a Nautrally Asperated engine are smaller and weaker than a engine that came with a turbo .... you will kill it if you go north of 10-12 psi ( not that it wont go higher, but it wont last long) ....

If you really want to play, get a 12V cummins VE engine , thier cheep and you cna make plenty of power for one of these trucks, of course you will need a trans and such , the VE dosent all have a intercooler and all that so easy install too ...

OK SO I MADE A SCREEN FOR THE TANK THAT WILL STILL SUCK FROM THE BOTTOM BUT WILL NOT PICK UP BIG CRAP. AND REPLACED FUEL FILTER. I AM MAKING 7 PSI WHEN REALLY INTO IT WITCH IS PLENTY IT SMOKES AT TURBO LAG BUT DOESNT LAST LONG WHEN I HIT ABOUT 4 PSI ITS CLEAR AS DAY. BUT NOW THE ISSUE IS I HIT 5TH AND IT TAKES MORE TIME THEN IT DID WITH THE OTHER IP ON TO HIT 75 OR CLIMB MUCH AFTER THAT? THINK TIMING IS STILL OFF BUT HAVE A 300 MILE ROUND TRIP TO TAKE TOMORROW AND I WILL JUST WATCH THE GAUGES SO I DONT HURT HER. REALLY NEED TO GET IT IN TIME. DOES THIS SOUND RIGHT

I think your getting ok pressure, but volume is another issue all together .. i have mine set @ 10 psi on the filter housing .. it runs awesome ... till i needed the HG's done 9 and the oil cooler leaking Coolant) ...

FYI - Dont go past 10-12 psi into the IP , you will blow it....

OK SO I DROVE THE TRUCK ABOUT 300 MILES YESTERDAY WITHOUT A HICUP :jump:
NOW I DROVE IT 32 MILES THIS MORNIN TO PT AND IT DIED 1/2 TANK STARTED BACK UP. DROVE IT HOME AFTER CRANKING ON IT FOR A BOUT 5 MINS AND ALL THE WAY HOME IT WOULD SURGE, GAIN A TON OF POWER THEN DROP BACK TO NORMAL GOING THROUGH TOWN AT 25 IT KEPT WANTING TO DIE COASTED INTO MY DRIVE WAY WOULD NOT START ,
I TOOK SENDING UNIT OUT OF TANK PLENTY OF FUEL HOOKED BACK UP STARTED UP MADE IT ABOUT 200 FT THEN DIED CRANKED FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS STARTED UP FLOORED IT IN REVERSE BACK BY THE GARAGE.:bat:

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON RAN THROUGH 25 GALLONS OF FUEL NO ISSUE. PUT 20 BUCKS IN THIS MORNING AND RUNS LIKE THIS EVEN DRIED 911 AFTER I GOT OUT OF PT TO GET RID OF ANY WATER.

REPLACED IP AND RETURN LINES NO FUEL IN VALLEY PAN REPLACED 2 LEAKING PRESSURE LINES TO INJECTORS. FUEL LINES ARE GOOD GOING TO LIFT PUMP FROM TANKS IT DOES IT ON EITHER TANK BY THE WAY. I AM READY TO SELL THIS DANG TRUCK.:dang: I PICKED IT UP ON TRADE HE NEVER REALLY HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT WHEN HE DID HAD IT FIXED ,AND GAVE ME ANY RECEIPTS THAT MAJOR WORK WAS DONE ON( INCL- LIFT PUMP LAST YEAR, GP'S, THE RELAY FOR GP'S AND NEW WIRING HARNESS WHEN HE FIRST GOT IT, AND NEW/ USED REAR AXLE. PLUS REGULAR OIL CHANGES AND YEARLY ANTIFREEZE CHECKS FOR CAVITATION ISSUE. REALLY TOOK CARE OF IT. WTF:scare2:

Start the truck, then slightly open the injector lines at the top of the injectors until fuel sprays out and close them off, sounds like you have air somewhere.

Have you replaced the return line fittings and the injector orings recently? They usually become brittle and this is where a lot air seeps into the system and will cause it to surge

OK NOW I HAVE SWITCHED OUT TO MY OLD IP PUMP BLED LINES BLAH BLAH, AND IT IS BACK TO IDLING FINE BUT I GIVE IT ABOUT 1000 RPM AND SHOOTS UP TO 2000RPM AND ALMOST DIES CATCHES ITSELF AND BACK TO NORMAL IDLE.

SO I PUT REBUILT PUMP BACK IN (GETTIN GOOD AT THIS TAKES ABOUT 2 HRS START TO FINISH) AND IT RUNS GOOD SURGES UP AND DIES TAKES FOREVER TO START AND THEN GOOD... SURGES AND DIES..... SO ON AND SO ON. THIS IS THE ONE I HAD IN YESTERDAY AND IT WAS FINE UNTIL THIS MORNIN, I AM AT A LOSS HERE. ARE BOTH THESE BAD? CAN I MAKE ONE GOOD ONE OUT OF THE 2? WOULD THE INFO OFF THE PUMPS BE ANY HELP?

ok I know now whats going on... your getting air in the system somewhere... take ur fuel filter housing lines from the lift pump and run it straight to the IP... then rev it up and see if it clears out ... your getting air most likley from the old filter housing some where.... i pulled mine and have a new filter head that i know is sealed and im running a Bio-Glass 5 Micron fuel filter ... way better

OK SO MY OLIVES ON THE ENDS OF THE LINE THAT GOES FROM FILTER HOUSING TO IP ARE BAD AND NO ONE AROUND HERE NOWS WHAT THE HECK I AM TALKING ABOUT SO I PRINTED A PIC TO BRING TO PARTS STORE TOMORROW BUT......

THE LINE ALSO HAS A CRACK IN IT :argh:AT THE BASE OF THE FILTER SIDE SMALL VERY SMALL SO I NEED A LINE BUT I PICKED UP A 90 DEGREE NIPPLE FOR THE FILTER HOUSING AND 18" OF FUEL INJECTION LINE THE HEAVY STUFF 3/8.
BUT I CANNOT FIND A FEMALE NIPPLE FOR THE END OF THE IP SIDE SO MAYBE I WILL JUST GET SOME TUBING AND BEND AND FLARE MY OWN....:w2:

I HAVE DONE PLENTY OF BRAKE LINES SO SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE THIS THATS IF I CAN GET THESE "OLIVES" UNLESS YOU KNOW WERE TO GET THEM....:humm: OR GET A LINE WITH NEW OLIVES

Those olives are not easy to find, and they come in all different sizes. When I found that mine was leaking, I couldn't even get them out easily, I had to soak the whole line for about 4 days in gasoline and use a pick to chisel it away.

I lied, its called a Fuel Injection Pump Install Kit, you can get it from autozone for $14 comes with the 2 olives for that main ip feed line, the seals on the shaft of the injector pump for if you remove it, and the 3 front bolts that hold it to the timing gear.

Ok watched the video , I must say, I'm stumped at this time .... I'm unsure of why it would surge like that ....

is the new IP guaranteed by the builders ?? I would think the governor is faulty in the IP... No air bubbles except that one.. No biggie there, humm ... Dunno ... U may have to take this one to a pro diesel or fuel shop ... I'm out of ideas...

I would have suggested the pick up, but no air at all so that limits that ...

dang, just can't see any reason for it .... Btw nice feed line ... Love that, and killer green IP ....:tu:

That initial surge once you let off is usually from a stuck metering valve, which is what I thought it was. Fixed mine by filling up the fuel filter with diesel kleen and running it for about 10 minutes. Not to sure what else it could be
