Follow up on the ABS light.

I replaced the front wheel calipers, shoes and rubber brake lines. A good thing I did to as I discovered a loose front wheel bearing on the passenger side. The calipers were shot so I just put new ones one. The ABS light symptoms changed slightly but the light still came full time once in while.

I had been experiencing lock up on the left rear sometimes. Therefore I also did the rear wheels. The brake cylinders were AFU, they appeared to have dust covers three sizes too big and were leaking fluid from the internal seals. The brake material on the left side was severely burnt and in fact had large chunks broken off and floating in the drum; this is what was causing my lockups.

I put new shoes, spring and wheel cylinders on. New fluid in the entire system, power bled and now have good brakes all around. I also removed, cleaned and checked the sensor in the rear differential, all appeared good.

But then the ABS light began flashing, something it hadn't done before; it used to just come on and stay on. Now it flashed code 16.

Which means everything with the system is fine, no trouble codes to report. But why was I getting it during normal driving anytime the key was on?

... and why don't I have brake lights anymore?

That last part I didn't realize until I was at a friends house hooking up a trailer. It turned out my brake light fuse was blown. We replaced the fuse and now the ABS light is off and so far, has stayed off. I'm happy at this point for a couple of reasons; first, I replaced all the necessary brake items that needed replaced and second, the shop I took it to earlier this year claimed I needed to buy a new ABS computer. Well, I don't think that would have fixed the problem, but now I have good brakes and no annoying ABS light.
