Engine Grounds

I am suspecting a bad ground somewhere on my truck. My radiator has sprung pinhole leaks on the tanks multiple times over the past year or so. I read up on a process called electrolysis, where stray voltage in coolant causes these leaks. Anyway, it is causes by bad grounds. Does anyone know where the main engine grounds are? Has anyone else had this problem?

How are you at keeping up with the SCAs on your coolant? I believe it was a big problem around the 80's but sca's were usually the cure that they had

yes SCA pre-charged coolant and yes electrolysis will happen when your pushing voltage through a block .... its accelerated when not running the correct coolant as well ....

Big grounds from batteries to frame and from frame to block on both sides of Engine , this should help stop stray voltage and electrolysis as well .... the batteries to frame wire should be much heavier than the wire from block to frame .... as a way of encouraging the voltage to take the path of least resistance .... :tu:

I am running proper coolant. Sca charged. The only grounds I can see are the ones on the left and right side on the front of the block. They look like the negative battery cables. Where are the others?https://www.dieselbombers.com/images...C_thinking.gif

I'll look for some, but did you try cleaning off the grounds?

CARP 01-01-2014 10:25 PM

not yet. I am in the process of soldering my radiator tanks. I will clean the two grounds on the front of the engine I can see.

sounds good

how's the grounding on your starter relay?

CARP 01-02-2014 08:58 AM

Is that on the fender well? The cables attached to the actual starter have corrosion on them. Could that cause it as well?

Dortiz 01-02-2014 01:58 PM

Very well could be the problem

CARP 01-02-2014 08:24 PM

Okay. .... I found a total of 4 grounds. Two on each side of the block from battery. One on left side behind lift pump to frame. And it looks like one on the drivers side head to the firewall. Are these all of them?
