A/C question
 

Hello, I'm new to the site like what I see, but I have an ac problem I'm hoping y'all will be able to help me with. When I got my 1993 CC 7.3L IDI it was the end of last summer and I didn't need ac, but defrost seemed to work ok so I didn't think I had any problems. Well come summer here in N Cali and I go to use my ac and nothing but hot air. So I check it out one day and I start to smell burning clutch smell, so I look and my compressors not touching so I replace the compressor clutch and it spins fine, no strange sounds. I hook up a recharging system for the ac and the pressure reads good but I'm still blowing outside air, no cooling. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for the help.

check to make sure your blend door in the cooling box is connected under the dash .... needs vaccum ..... check to make sure the cable is connected to the hot/cold door .... cant remember if its vaccum or cable ..... think mine is cable :humm:

What is your pressure reading? Are you using a gauge that comes with a can or a manifold set? When you're checking pressure is the compressor running constantly or cycling?

I'll check again tomorrow about the pressure, I've done it both with the can and a manifold set. If I remember right they both read 40psi on the low side. I can't remember what I got on the high side. I'll double check it tomorrow. Thanks

Dang I hate memories. I went to check and when the clutch engaged it sounded like a danged 'ol soda can in a bike tire. Compressor hast to be bad. Start saving for one of them. Oh and the pressure stayed at 50psi on both sides, in 90° weather, while making that racket. :argh::td:

yeah thats not a good deal ... front bearing is toast .... thier not real expencive ... check rockauto.com ......... I beleive around 190 or so

Ok went the cheapest route for now, got a compressor from pick'n'pull, turned good by hand and built pressure by hand. Swapped out the clutch from my old one,different pully and I had just put that clutch on the compressor, put in 44oz of 134a, since that's what was in the donor truck, and my pressure on the low side is 20psi while the compressor is working and creeps up to 50psi when disengaged. Only comes on for a split second, high side is about 100psi disengaged and 150psi when the compressor kicks on. Do I need more refrigerant? Thanks to all the info so far.

Yeah, you need some more. Did you pull a vacuum on the system after you did the compressor? Also, I would recommend replacing the receiver/drier if you haven't done so yet. When a compressor goes bad, it's common for it to collect metal shavings. Depending on ambient temps you should have 35ish on the low side and about 2 to 2.5 times ambient temp on the high side. So if it's 90, you should be 180 to 225.

No I didn't pull a vacum, I know your supposed to and I didn't replace the dryer, if I could I'd've put nitrogen to dry it out. But I'm broke and just trying to patch things till I get a job. I did pull the hoses and blow air backwards through and stuck a magnet. I only saw some metal right in the hose by the compressor, I didn't see any on the other side by the dryer, so I blew air backwards. Ill put some more 134a in it tomorrow and use the pressures you gave me. Thanks a bunch, I plan on replacing the whole system once stuff is more stable. Thanks again.

I don't know man. I've out in one 22oz can of 134a got the pressures, added another 22oz can, still same pressures as before. Put in an18oz can. No change in pressures. Replaced pressure sensor, same pressures and still kicks compressor on for 1 second and stays free wheeling for 10-15 seconds. When compressor is engaged low side drops to 15psi and high side goes to 150psi. Kicks off and high side creeps down to 100psi and low side creeps up to 50psi. As soon as it hit 50psi on the low side compressor kicks on and cycles again for 1 second. :argh:

you need to empty out the system .... you have moisture in the system that is causing ice to form in the expansion valve and thats why the compressor is kicking off .... so the only way to fix it is pull it all back out and pull vac. for about 30-45 min. and then refill with fresh or your just wasting your own time and money.... trust me I do this all day :tu:
