overload towing

1986 F250, zf5, sterling 10.25 w/ 4.10, banks sidewinder. engine in great condition and truck overall runs like new-ish ha. so my question is can my truck with a weight distibuting hitch haul a 27ft trailer with 11- 15k on it. that would put my GCVW at 17-21k. i know that this is way about what the manufacturer recomends but is it relativley safe if i keep speeds around 70mph? I will be towing skid steers and cars on this trailer. just want to know if this is a bad idea. thanks

P.S. im very fimiliar and good at towing already ( large boats, long enclosed trailers) but nothing above 8-9k though.

this trailer is a tag along

What's the trailer rated for?

fordidipower 02-03-2013 06:10 PM

the frame have no idea and axles are 6500 each and there are 2. but i figure it would be good to buy because i could ajust the loads so easily because its so long and i talked the dude down to 500 bucks

Any truck will haul most anything but the big question is can you stop it? That plays into the formula for figuring out the trucks carrying capacity as well

fordidipower 02-03-2013 06:24 PM

well like i said i have quite a bit of expierence with towing and i understand how to get er to stop. i just wanted to know can my truck pull this or what kind of things to expect from towing that load with this truck. i towed in the past with an 05 cummins and sold it when i got married and bought my ford and a 2011 tacoma for my wife. so towing with this old ford is new. its a single cab 4x4 so its about 3k lighter and alot shorter than my dodge

Red_Rattler 02-03-2013 08:06 PM

The truck will handle it fine just doesnt have as good brakes as the 05 or the power (obviously) but if you use your head and be smart about it, it will work just fine.

k i just didnt want to be one of "those people" ya know.......... you see them on the road and you think " what an idiot"

You could stop or slow down sooner if you slowed your speed some. IMO, thats alot of weight to be towing a those speeds. Common sense should dictate at that point. A slower speed is much safer.

driving a 1000 mile at 55 is unrealistic when time is money. 70 is still on the bottom end of being productive but i like to be alive so 80 is out of the question

Bigg Redd 02-04-2013 12:16 PM

Yeah I hear ya. Just make sure that you check, double and triple safety check your rig for a safe journey. With your experience, only you can make that determinatioin. Be safe out there bro.:c:
