making battery cables

hi everybody after twisting a bat cable clamp apart do to corrosion i need a new neg cable for passenger side and others arent far behind and after paying $180 for a positive cable through dodge last summer im really looking to keep it cheap and ive helped build cables for farm trucks around the ranch any ways i was hoping someone has some info about where to get rolls of cable and what gauge of cable i need and the connectors for the ends of the cables i intend on sodering the ends as i do not have a crimper any who all info would be great thanks you for reading:c:

H.R.D 01-16-2011 08:09 PM

Here is something that might be up your ally. I believe the size of our cables are 2/0 gauge.

24vcumminscowboy 01-16-2011 08:13 PM

thank you:tu: i have found a website that i can get those i was looking at those as well this is the website that found that sells all the supplies now i just need to find out what gauge cable i need and what type of terminals im thinking about using brass terminals heres the website Automotive Wire Terminals - Battery Cable & Electrical Supplies

H.R.D 01-16-2011 08:19 PM

I'm pretty sure we have 2/0 gauge positive cables. The website looks good I too need to do some new cables for mine.

24vcumminscowboy 01-16-2011 08:26 PM

ya i figured i need about 3 new cables and for the price of one cable from the dealer i can get all the supplies needed to make the 3 cables i need and just its just handy around the ranch to be able to make bat cables whenever needed

H.R.D 01-16-2011 08:30 PM

Yep its always good to be able to do your own.:c:

24vcumminscowboy 01-16-2011 08:49 PM

amen, i just added up all the prices for enough supplies to make 2 neg cables including heat shrink tubing, solder slugs, and a heat gun for only 106.75 and dodge wanted 105 for the one neg cable i need i know what im doin

3 Attachment(s)
Heavy Duty, Aftermarket, Custom Battery Cables for your Car, Truck or RV for custom made cables or parts (and great advice too). If you look there they also have the correct length of cables listed.

Use 2/0 welding cable. I would strongly suggest crimping instead of soldering. I did a couple of solder joints and didnt like the results. You dont have to buy a crimper you can rent them for a day.

Heres what mine turned out like:

I'm a fan of welding cable myself.

Dr. Evil 01-16-2011 09:37 PM

Actual battery cable is much cheaper - but I like the welding cable too. It had good abrasion resistance due to the rubber jacket.

Looks like a great site Evil but the site is not in business as of now. Hopefully they will be back up and going soon.

Dr. Evil 01-16-2011 10:58 PM

looks like they are in business to me. If not, there is still good advice there that is worth reading and all the more reason to do it yourself.

good website lots of useful info thanks dr. evil as to using welding cable i like the idea but i read what that guy says about welding cable and oil and i dont think welding cable would work for as my front main is going out and i have several other oil leaks i havent discovered yet good info though :c:

Dr. Evil 01-17-2011 01:29 PM

FYI, my cables are covered in oil and no problems yet. Of course, your milage may vary.

Dr. evil do u happen to know what the battery terminals are made of that the guy at custom battery cables sells not sure if u bought terminals from him or not i just dont want any of those lead cheap-o terminals just curious if u know

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

also if anyone knows where i could rent crimpers from and a heat gun like any chain of part stores that usually have them i just got off the phone with autozone i figured they would have some but they dont have crimpers or a heat gun just wondering if any body knows of a different place i could rent from :c:

Dr. Evil 01-17-2011 05:59 PM

You have to go to a tool rental place....RSC Equipment is the major one up here...try them if you have one close

YOU have a PM! :rocking:

Mendomotox 03-18-2011 08:14 PM

I also used the marine/rv style batt terminals with big ring connectors ( from home depot) and the stock cables. That way it is easy to hook up accesories too. I've been running the aurozone brand Terminals for 3 mounths (on a 1st gen) starting it every morning cold with zero problems.

diesel&coffee 09-13-2012 05:09 PM

Dr Evil

Where did you get the brass terminals?? Don't think custombatterycables has them?? Take it you made yours? Thanks for the note on soldering them - I was going to go that route but may not now!

dwightz 09-17-2012 08:14 PM

I still prefer to use oem parts than aftermarket on my cummins
