I Say We Just Turn Over the Whole City of Detroit to the big 3 , Let them set up housing Schools, Food Supply Medical Facilities Ect.... And create there own community , With there own Pay Scale and living expenses , Set up Amtraks That run through the city to pick up the workers bring them home ect... Push out all other Business Districts and give them Tax Breaks to relocate .

But hey Thats just my ramblings with over 15,000 Abandoned houses It would be a good start

IIRC cerebus had started meeting with the unions before the deal went through just so they'd know what kind of spot they'd be in and how flexible the unions would be open to being.

here's the thing. the employee cost of building a japanese car is about $200/per while an american car costs about $1500/car. we all know where it's going. health care and retirement. plus the people in the american union auto factories make around $30/hour plus benefits IIRC. that's a big defecit to try and over come in the name of being competitive. what's to be done? you can't tell these retired people that have planned their lives around having X amount of health care, X amount of pension, X amount of etc, etc that starting tomorrow it's all over. that's not right. it's not fair to them. they did the job and held up their end of the bargain. if there's cut backs these people could loose their homes. the unions need to pull their head out of the clouds and the union needs to start a grandfathering clause. everyone hired after X day is on this new payscale. the automakers can't sustain $30/hour wages for somebody to place carpet on the floor and another guy to hang a door. can't be done. look at the pay scales in the non-union assembly plants like nissan's in TN and hyundai's in AL. very different between the union and non-union plants. the union needs to guide it's people, as said above, into the mind set that a little bit of something is better than nothing. the union needs to get back to its roots and instead of holding companies hostage in the name of paychecks, they need to concentrate on what's really a fair wage, with fair benefits, under fair working conditions. that's why unions were started in the first place. but that's going to be a tough sell because these union heads like living their lifestyles and the more the members make, the more the union can collect in dues. i know this because everytime we had a slight bump in a contract our dues went up. it's like clockwork.

we're also going to need some help from the "big wigs" and someone's going to have to curb these big salaries with huge benfits. they're just as much to blame for the state of things. when lee iacocca took over chrysler in the late 70's he paid himself $1 per year in salary and vowed he'd remain at that until the company turned around. does anyone see this kind of commitment and dedication happening today because i don't.

plus our government needs to step up to the plate. it's way easier to sell a japanese car in america than it is to sell an american car in japan. that's not right and our government needs to take care of this. i'm all for honest competition but this is far from honest.

the automakers are partially to blame here too. i mean honda, toyota, and hyundai didn't exactly sneak up them. they could easily see the market shares changing places and still did nothing. they also didn't plan for their futures. they were too busy living the good life and loving the hay-days to take notice. it's time they start building cars people want to buy instead of throwing the same old crap at us decade after decade. i'm mostly speaking to gm hear as chrysler and ford are atleast trying to be innovative. gm's still playing it safe and losing fast.

well, that's how i see things anyway.

Agreed. The push rod V8 is dead - or should be. Get V6 with twins or some other form of charger on it. Get diesel and diesel electric in this mix. Ethanol is just a shit gimic to keep the same old crap on the road - no innovation on their part.

There may still be a need for the big block but it isn't in a subruban that is for sure.

Start thinking like the EU. Jump the fuel to $6-$8 per gallon and see how many people start to complain. It simply can't survive the way it is going now.

I don't know what the answer is but on the subject of brands maybe it is time to finally get rid of all the brand vehicles that look and act the same except for a name plate? All are guilty of this one.

Steve Jobs (Apple) has earned a salary of $1 per year since about 2002.

Granted, his stock returns for last year were somewhere around $646 million, but that's only due to his company rocketing skyward with success the likes of which hasn't been seen in a long time, outside of artificial oil company profits.

So, hmm....CEO makes a buck a year and the company outperforms everyone. Shocker huh?

I by no means wish to offend anyone or step on anyone's toes, but I whole-heartedly agree with the above statement. Unions were a GOOD thing in the beginning, protecting workers through fair wages and working conditions. But it seems they have gone WAY to far. $30 an hour (if that is indeed correct) is a bit high to stand on an assembly line and perform a repetitive function.

Being in charge of a distribution center with a $2 million dollar budget, I would have a real hard time paying someone those kind of wages when I KNOW that I could get someone else to work the same job for a LOT less.

I do acknowledge that here in Texas unions are not near as strong as they are up north, but it seems to me that the business philosophy should be the same. It all boils down to getting as much production as you can for the cheapest price.

I am completely in favor of American products by American workers, but at some point the American worker is going to have to realize that, as has already been said, a job at a lower salary is better than NO job at all. It is time that we, as Americans, make a conscious decision to keep our jobs here in America.

There is no one in this country that does ANY job that is worthy of a $5M salary, period. It seems to me that there are plenty of profits that can be shared with EVERYONE. The big corporations' failure to share the profits with their workers has created this problem of workers, through their union, demanding very high wages which results in higher prices for consumers. Aren't the workers also consumers? :se:

Is there a simple solution? To you and me it is painfully obvious. To the upper echelon, it would seem that the solution is somewhat evasive.

It is my hope that, at some point, the leaders of the large US corporations will recognize that it is their responsibilty to keep the US economy strong by supporting the American work force, without being held hostage by a labor union.

Hire all mexicans and pay top guy 48 billion a year and pay the stockholders a bonus,and the reason the gas in EU is 4 to 5 a gallon to cover their health plans and other things.

We need to get back to common sense, nobody worth the big money they are paying leaders and then if they do a bad job they get the golden parachute and we all pay more so the company can keep making high profits.

Someone is trying to get rid of the middle class and just leaving the very rich and the very poor

I am glad They are back in the US. However diamler was makeing some impressive improvements over past chrysler creations. I really like how they have made interiors and the road noise is much better than previous years. Plus styling was awesome with the 300 and the magnum and pacifica. Hopefully the new people will stretch the boundaries as well. As for the Unions I LOVE THEM, I am one and thats all I am gonna comment cause I would get banned if I told all the non union people How I feel.. MOPAR OR NO CAR!! IBEW L.U 76
