Nobody seems to know what to do with my tranny...

I took it to the dealer and they couldn't figure it out. I ended up taking it to AAMCO and thry have not been able to figure it what is wrong with my tranny:argh:.

It is a 2001 Dodge Diesel 2500 and it had what i thought was OD issues but they are telling me that it is my lockout. The truck has 147K miles on it and I have never really had any problems with the tranny. I don't pull nothing to heavy and it started acting up not to long ago.

It will not shift into 4th gear and I have not been able to figure it out. It will only do it once in a while. I let it sit for a couple of days and I started it up, take off and it works great. If I go somewhere and get back to it it will not shift and the rpms just reves up. It shift great up and down the scale, but like I mention it gets sick once in a while..more now then before.

Not sure what else to do. There is a diesel performace shop close by that I'm going to take it once I get back from my military duty this weekend, hopefully they might be able to figure it out.

Thank for all the help.

a performance shop can fix that.

Your 4 th gear sounds like my 1st see my 48RE thread. There are so many issues with electronic autos that I'm told it takes a very good Trans man and the best diagnostic equipment. Thats a quote from my Dodge service department. They are going to reprogram my PCM but what he said was that if the reprograming does not do the job on my rig they need to run a series of pressure checks that won't always trip the code. Those pressure tests should expose if there is a mechanical problem in the valve body or elsewhere. I know this doesn't answer the question but points you only to researching a repair shop that specializes in your module trans and not a variety. I'm in the same boat as you with 900 dollars out of pocket and no real fix at least not yet. The Dodge guy who gave me the quote is my next stop albeit a 3 hour drive from home!

i had simalar issue on my powerstroke and ended up being a sensor on top of rear diff , if your dodge has one try removing it and clean it real good ,might make a difference

Just taking a shot here but check my final comments for my 48RE problem thread. The mechanic who found my problem said when he loosened the band adjustment lock nut and he could screw the band adjustment nut in 4 full turns with his fingers before he got resistance. Also he didn't elaborate on this point but after he adjusted the torque to the proper inch lbs he could tell by how far in the adjustment bolt was in as to how much band material was left. His comment was the adjustment fixed my problem but I should start saving my nickels for a rebuild because the band was well worn. What worried him was that on lots of the trans he had seen that were used for heavy or regular towing the band material when it got thin began to crack and flake. Some owners reported that when the gear went away it it was overnight. I'm not a guru here but your 4th sounds like my 1st and also sounds like when the trany gets warm 4th disappears. Sounds like expanding clearances or something is sticking. Are your bands adjusted to spec? Secondly are the trans pressures good! Those were questions he checked with the code reader attached and a twenty minute road test me driving making the problem happen while he had me start and stop several times, then he drove it.

The chrysler tranny has 2 bands. One if for reverse and the other is second. 4th is a flt clutch pack so bands can not be the problem in this case. If the 4th gear clutch pack wears out the truck will still move because it has a sprag clutch that holds while it is shifting from 3rd to 4th.

Its probably time for a rebuild , 147k miles on the stock tranny is a lot..

4th clutch pack sounds like its gone... we had a genius in our trans that installed the pack and the hunk of steel that's supposed to apply the pressure in backwards... the hunk of steel was on the sie applying the force rather than supporting the force from the back side... just kept flaring the clutch pack and allowing it to slip, eventually toasted it... started wher eit would lock up if you got in it hard and up past normal 4th shift speed, then it got to the point it'd kick out if you changed throttle position and load, then it became non existant... my trans guy quoted me around 500 to drop and replace the clutch pack... i believe that was with parts... a full rebuild is your better bet and value :U: just replacing the 4th clutch pack (if that is what's wrong with it) doesnt ensure that something else, elsewhere isnt going to go bad...
