coated pistons

i am thinking about building a new motor my 53 block took a dump on me what are coated pistons and the advantages of them is it worth doing

theywill make it so your pistons can take more heat from the fuel you add. i had mine ceramic coated when i bought them. they are mahle pistons that i had to send somewere in california to have them coated. they told me they will withstand 1800* all day long since aluminum melts at about 1300*

Think that they might have exaggerated a little bit? :poak:

might have but i dont get my truck past 1200 at any given point, it was just an assurance knowing they can withstand the higher heat if i accidentally do it

hmm i can get to 1600 right now i think i will look into this so they have aluminum pistons i figured they would be steel

nope aluminum expands and contracts at a much better rate. there full aluminum pistons, i had mine ceramic coated for $150 for the set ill look threw my recipts to find out who did the work

Weight is also a big issue. Cummins currently uses articulated two-piece pistons with steel crowns and aluminum skirts on ISL's and ISM's, while the ISX uses all-steel pistons. Only the B's and C's are still stuck with aluminum.

The aluminum pistons are a limiting factor of our engines, almost as severe as our crappy heads. There are several sets of all-steel 24 valve pistons out there, which cost three-plus times as much as the aluminum pistons but let you raise your max-safe EGT threshold by 50%...

As far as coatings for aluminum pistons, the name I keep hearing through the grapevine is "PPE".
