Which one is louder?

Between Cummins, Powerstroke, and Duramax, which is the loudest and which is the quietest "stock" in years 2004, 2006, and 2008?

1999 Sport Cummins 06-29-2009 12:48 PM

i would have to say cummins is louder stock or tuned up... and i am not sure but i would think that the duramax is the quietest

JaimeG 06-29-2009 12:56 PM

I would think so too, but we have a 2005 powerstroke and too me its pretty loud, stock. And i've heard some stock cummins on youtube that sound very quiet.

1999 Sport Cummins 06-29-2009 01:12 PM

yea but were the ones you heard the 08s bc my mom has an 08 and it sounds like a kitty cat:moto::lol88:
the 04 cummins are prolly the loudest because they dont have as much epa stuff... but ive heard a few loud power strokes

GRI 06-29-2009 01:16 PM

any power stroke I ever heard is wicked loud. as far as engine noise. The newest I heard was an 06 and the engine noise is much louder than my 04. when the 3rd gens came out they tok themselves out of the loud engine contest and left it to the powerstokes

2001shrtbedcummins 06-29-2009 01:18 PM

Yea, the loudest by far is going to be the powerstroke. It's all in the injection event. The 6.0L does not feature common rail injection, which means they can't have a pilot injection to quiet the engine down like the duramax and cummins of that year span.

JaimeG 06-29-2009 01:18 PM

Watch this video and fast forward to 2:30. Its a 2007 with a 5.9L.

1999 Sport Cummins 06-29-2009 01:21 PM

oh.. idk but my bro has an 03 with out the muffler and its the loudest pickup ive ever heard i can hear him shift into sixth a couple miles out of town... and if you pass some one in mine or his 03 and ur running bout 2400 rpms when your tail pipe hits there door you can make someone :edit: their britches its so :edit: Loud

JaimeG 06-29-2009 01:24 PM

Then watch my video of the 05 Powerstroke.

ryan.kocurek 06-29-2009 03:31 PM

my 95 dodge is loud as hell with 1 7 in stack. no thats has nothing to do with what ya'll are talking bout though. but the 2004 dodge man. tranny is louder then the auto.

DieselWeasel 06-29-2009 04:42 PM

My straight pipe exhaust is perfect...

But the engine is VERY loud!

The 6.0 liter HEUI's pulsed several times per combustion stroke, right? One of those wasn't a "pilot" injection?

Originally it did, and they were very quiet at idle anyways. It was one of the first things to get axed in the upcoming 100 reflashes. Every once in a while I'll hear an 03 running on the original flash, I love the way they sound, but then again I've always been fond of the powerstrokes.

JaimeG 06-29-2009 08:11 PM

In my opinion the Powerstroke became the best sounding pickup truck diesel engine when the 2nd gen 24v was replaced in 2003. The newer cummins sound pretty bad, until they get twin turbos, then they sound badass.

huck25 06-29-2009 09:17 PM

If your talking engine noise the powerstrokes win hands down if your talking exhaust note I would have to say the cummins and the fastest stock would have to be the chevy unfortunatly(lighter by lots then the other 2)

JaimeG 06-29-2009 09:23 PM

I agree on the chevy being the fastest, but what year cummins are you talking about.

94cummins12v 06-29-2009 09:33 PM

the 12v is the loadest with dual 5" stacks by far over the power joke and the dirtymax

I started a thread on another forum asking if it was possible to put a 24v cummins in a 3rd gen. I just love the sound of those 24valve 2nd gens. If it was possible I would probably do it just for the sound.

94cummins12v 06-29-2009 10:28 PM

yes you can do it just cost $$$

FarmDiesel 06-30-2009 11:11 AM

I got a buddy that had a 06 5.9 with 4" turbo back a fake muffler and a 8" tip. I could hear him start it up and haul ass down his dirt road 10 miles from my house :ouch:

Ramanian 07-03-2009 01:57 AM

1. Cummins
2. Powerstroke
3. Duramax

Cummins' are just plain ol' loud, video clips dont do it justice, as real life would listening to them. Powerstrokes although noisy, have the distinct sound, and are higher pitched. A Duramax is very, very hard to hear, unless it has some miles on the clock, or straight pipe, or stacks i doubt many will hear its engine. I know i have trouble hearing them.

midnite><og 07-04-2009 10:58 AM

from what ive seen/thought...

loudest to quiet - powerstroke, cummins, duramax

1999 Sport Cummins 07-04-2009 12:06 PM

For one thing there is a diffrence in the sounds of the exaust...
1. Cummins
2. PowerChoke
3. Duramax
And the motor....
1. PowerJoke
2. Cummins
3. Duramax
And thats in every year up to 2006 after that the epa cracked down hard on diesels and screwed it all up
