12V Swap

A buddy of mine took a Power Stroke out a of truck and installed a 12V Cummins.

The question: installing gauges, Tach, oil pres.,temp, pyro. Is there a kit out there to hook all of those up to that engine. I know about 3 of those should be fairly simple but the Tach has been a pain :argh:.

The truck runs now w/no gauges.

Any help would be great!

Believe the tach runs off the alternator on the older Cummins, or most all older diesels for that matter. All 4 you can get aftermarket, and there are lots of manufacturers out there. May I suggest giving our vendors a shot??

I know for the 2nd gen 12V, the tach pickup is off a magnetic sensor from the crank pulley, thats what the 2 shallow slots are cut out of the pulley are for, a break in the signal for it to measure RPM. I assume the 1st gens are the same but, I believe you can get a signal from the W terminal on the Alt. There is a write-up about it somewhere I believe, can't remember where though...

On my conversion I just used a Autometer diesel tach with its own sensor that mounts on the alt. The only thing about an aftermarket tach like that is, you have to have access to a laser tach to calibrate the reading, the tach does NOT come calibrated from the factory.

Also what help do you need with the other gauges?

EGT just taps into the exhaust manifold, PRE-TURBO is the best location although you can go post-turbo as well, just remember to add approx 200-250 Deg to the reading if you go post-turbo.

Oil pressure I just ran the tubing to the top of the oil filter housing, there should be an extra 1/8 NPT fitting there that you can take out and put your fitting for the gauge in place.

Water temp - you can either try and reuse the stock sensor on the driver's side rear of the head, its a big brass fitting with one wire coming out of it. Or you can put a mechanical gauge in. Since I wanted to do away with as much wiring as I could( I despise it...) I modified the stock brass fitting to accept the aftermarket gauge, cut off the ends, drilled and tapped it to accept the new fitting. If you mess with that fitting, make sure to use thread sealant on it when putting it back together, its not in a place where you want to have to work on it again...

Hope any of that helped in the least..:c:

Thanks guy's i will do some more checking to find the write-up on the Tach. The other gauges not a big deal, hooked them up on my 24v. Didn't know a darn thing about the tach. Lots of help, Thanks!!
