To chip or not to chip, that is the question

I have done some looking to see about putting a chip on my 2001 cummins to help with hauling my boat on the road and pulling it out at the ramp. It seems like my truck isn't really giving the power it should with a load on it and its not a very big boat or heavy for that matter. So I am looking into chips to get a better performance and I need some advice on what to get as I have a mostly stock truck except for cold air intake and elbow, 5 inch turbo back exhaust, a deep tranny pan, airtex fuel pump mounted in the stock location and a big line fuel kit from the lift pump to the VP44 also have guages for trans temp, EGT, and Fuel Pressure. I have looked at the Edge EZ chip with 3 settings up to 65HP and the other was a Edge comp model with 5 settings and 5 fuel settings. Does anyone have any info or have run these in their mostly stock trucks? I'd like to get a little bit more power hauling a load but not break the bank or the transmission. Any advice or help to find something that I could use would be greatly appreciated fellas. Thanks.

Sounds like a nice rig! Certainly nothing wrong with chipping for sure, BUT, believe me....the temptation to start dipping into the throttle WILL overtake you at times. If youre gonna chip that beast, ya may wanna start putting away some dollars for a trans rebuild. Its gonna happen.....been there done that.

Thanks Bigg Redd it is a great rig I bought it used with 82k from a guy out in Vegas and it is absolutely pristine inside and outside minus a few lil dents. The under carridge still has factory parts stickers on a lot of the parts (drive shaft, fuel tank, and several others)

I am quite concerned about getting the diesel speed fever and I want to stay away from it as the mileage on my truck is so low but that being said I've heard great things about the edge comp and a stock tranny or stock truck if its not dogged to death all the time. Which I'm sure is right about the time the "sickness" takes over as it a button push away from smoke and speed. I dont really care about "rolling coal" at all but I do want my truck to last a long time and get the most out of it I can. So I think I'm gonna pull the trigger and go with the edge comp but try to stay 3 or less as I don't feel I need anything more than that. Another thing I'm curious about is I read that a lot of guys on these forums do up to 100hp injectors with almost stock truck with minor upgrades like fuel pump, exhaust, air intake, and they have nothing but positive things to say. Since I have guages, and deep tranny pan to keep it cool, intake, intake elbow, exhaust, upgraded lift pump, and just recently installed an exhaust header should I be concerned about anything except the tranny if I went with bigger injectors? What about a larger turbo? Or am I just reaching for stuff and have the bug and just need to wait and enjoy my truck until its time to rebuild the tranny then go bigger and better? I've only had the truck for about 6 months and I have learned that the possibilities are almost endless if you have the cash to play with.

Just remember, whatever you do to your rig....youre in control. If youre looking to get 100 hp sticks, then you should also look into a larger turbo or twins. This for sure will kill your tranny. Oh yeah you'll likely have to stud that mill also. Call it cheap insurance. Enjoy whatcha have now, and in the mean while save up for your upgrades, but have a goal. The sky is the limit when it comes to modding. "Cash regulates HP! " Weigh whatcha want vs whatcha need.

I have very conservative mods on my rig, and it does all I need, with very decent MPG....plus I can still smoke the duallies at will.
