idle surge then dies at start up
I have a 99 dodge 2500 cummins. Starts surges then dies, dead throttle. After several tries it starts and runs fine. New lift pump, checked all fuel connection s. Can't figure it out. |

But, usually when I have a 24v that has a starting issue similar to yours, it usually indicates an injection pump in the process of failing. Its possible that that it’s s sensor, an intermittent short, an ecm issue, and a handful of other things. But most times your symptoms are indicative of a vp44 issue. Do do you know how to isolate the injection pump from the ecm to illuminate that possibility? I can type it up tomorrow if you don’t. I just walked in from my shop or I’d do it now. |
Your lift pump is not holding pressure and is letting fuel siphon back into the tank. It is starting with fuel that is in the common rail injector pump but without any more fuel in the line the engine starves out and dies. Time for a new lift pump.

What Lift pump do you have in truck. Usually if you have fuel drain due to leak or bad pump its a long start not a start surge then die. cycle the key and see what codes slide through the odometer. Sounds like a bad VP. especially if you had to put in a new lift pump due to the old one being bad, coudlve fried the ECM on the pump

Figure this out?
