Need help ASAP

So I just got this 1996 ram 2500 12v cummins and drove perfectly home then the next day it was shooting white smoke really bad and wouldn’t go passed 5 mph and was running like it was clogged. So I Look at the air filter is completely black and needs replaced so I checked the turbo to and there oil and in it do I need to just replace the turbo or is it something else??? Please let me know ASAP!!!

There’s not near enough information in your post to give you a hard answer. Turbo could be worn but still operational, could be shot.

White smoke can be a lot of things and very well may not have anything to do with your turbo.

are you or anyone you know experienced in working on a diesel? A mechanically injected diesel?

Cumdawg 12-26-2018 07:41 PM

No I’m not really mechanical to work on diesels but I did take the intake to the air filter off of the turbo and it drove way better

Wipe down why you can on the inlet of the turbo. Clean out the filter box and intake connection (big hose between box and turbo). Throw a clean air filter in it.

Then run run it for a while and pull it apart and see what it looks like inside.

Alright thank you I will try thtv

Cumdawg 12-27-2018 06:22 AM

If I do that and after awhile there’s still oil in there what should I do replace the turbo?

Crawler 12-27-2018 03:11 PM

If you’re getting excessive oil deposits at the inlet of the turbo then there is probably a seal that’s going out. Depending on the wear that has occurred internally, the turbo can re rebuilt.

Or or you can look at an upgrade.

If youre not comfortable removing and rebuilding the turbo, then get a new or reman turbo with a warranty and be done with it. Just one less thing to stress about. If it were me, I'd just replace it. Its way easier in my opinion. Or like Crawler says, look into an upgrade.....if budget permits.

So I replaced my air filter and cleaned my box and inlet really good but now my intercooler is puking oil out what does this mean?

Means whatever oil was / is leaking from your turbo, for whatever amount of time, has collected in your intercooler. Should be cleaned out...…….
