47re Tranny Problem
 
I just bought a 2003 Cummins Turbo Diesel, I believe it has a 47re automatic transmission in it based on the vin # and it was assembled in 2002. If I take off from a stand still with it in D it starts out in 3rd gear and will not shift to 4th, I can manually shift it into 2nd and start off in 2nd then manually shift into D and it shifts fine to 3rd gear but not 4th, when I shift into 1st it still starts in 2nd, seems to me I don't have 1st gear or 4th gear. I have replaced the Gov. Pressure sensor and solenoid and it didn't fix the problem. Any ideas where to check next ? Hope all that made sense.

could check the fwd and aft bands adjustment. there are several you tube videos on it. could be more than one problem. like a band adjustment and a OD switch.:humm:

I dropped the pan again yesterday, watched videos on how to adjust front and rear bands. When the front band is adjusted the adjusting screw is so far into the tranny that the lock nut only has about 7/8 of the threads on the adjusting screw when its tightened. Seems that the band is pretty well worn down. The rear band ( inside the pan ) adjusted fine. Put it all back together and went for a test drive, it still started out in 3rd when I was in D. I had 1st when manually shifted a couple times but now its back to only 2nd and 3 rd when manually shifted. I talked to a reputable tranny shop and of course they said that type of tranny ( 47re ) had a bunch of problems and get it upgraded with better parts for around $3500 or so, also they would hook a computer to it to see exactly what's wrong with it. At this point I'm not sure what to do.:argh:

Depending on what you want to do with the truck power wise... I would just get a stock rebuild and a new converter. The symptom of the forward adjusting screw going all the way in is usually the band is shot, or the little spade fell off the end of the adjustment rod and is laying on top of the valve body usually retrieved with a magnet or dropping the valve body and replacing the band which sucks.

At this time I just want to keep the truck stock I will do some towing but nothing that stock can't handle. I'm glad you confirmed a stock rebuild, I was thinking the same thing, its gotta be a little cheaper and be just fine for what I would use the truck for. With a flashlight I could see the spade piece connected to the band still so I think that's ok. At this time I think I will take it to a shop for a rebuild, I really appreciate all the help.:tu:

When you take your truck to the trany shop. Have them put a shift kit in and drill the body out for more oil flow. Doing this drop my trany temp by 10 degrees.
