Best year cummins

For my next pickup I was looking into the Cummins and hopefully I can get one after the summer. Anyhow, I was wondering what year(s) was the best year for the Cummins in terms of mpg, easiness to add power, I'm thinking about 450-500 hp, and engine life.

I'm currently leaning toward an 04.5ish, but don't really know much about Cummins except they run forever and sound cool.

I would get a 06-07 5.9 just to be able to use EFI Live.

Thanks, I've heard great things about EFI Live, I just thought that was a Duramax thing. Can the 6.7s run it too, I live in Montana where there are no emissions so I could do away with the DPF and EGR, not to sure about mileage with them though. But, thanks again, I'll be looking for those years.

Yeah, I really thought about the 12v (96-98) ones, but they all have 200k+ miles and that's just too much for me. But I've heard of the early 12v getting 28 mpgs and they will all have more power than my 6.5 diesel, I think the only diesel with less power is the 6.2:tttt:. I'm shooting for an 03 or newer one so I can get the crew cab and finding 6 speeds in them seems easier than on the Duramax (that's the main reason I'm shooting for Cummins). Really the 500hp is a little excessive, I don't do any towing, just love diesels, so maybe in the 300 hp area will be great, easily in the 12v spectrum, just curious did they make the extended cab doors open on 12v cummins. My friends 97 doesn't do that and my 96 Chevy doesn't either and its a pain in the :moon: when trying to load the back. I know the 24v did.

No they didn;t make those rear opening doors on the early dodges. I wish they did.

well :dang:, I think that's going to be what keeps me from getting a 12v, I really got interested in them when I heard of one getting 28 mpg.

Everyone makes mpg claims what they actually get is a different story. I had a 99 powerstroke, then a f150,then a 99 Cummins and now gave an 04 Cummins and love it to death four door Laramie can't beat it. Tows like a dream rides like a caddy :thumbup:

I've gotten up to 26mpg freeway in my 12 valve.
And the rear open dors are nice.

I've gotten 23.7 mpg with my 6.5 and I keep hearing of these cummins getting 25 no sweat, I'm shooting for a 03+ so I can get the crew cab, I've always liked those ones better anyhow.
