47RH A618 - O/D not working
After having the torque convertor changed in the 47RH A618 automatic of my 94 Ram, the overdrive would not engage anymore. Oil (ATF3) has been refilled.
Any experiences or ideas how I can get the O/D coming back, and what the reason for this is?? Thanks and greetings from Germany, Tom |
Come on guys. Is there really no one having an idea? - Hard to believe

Wow Unless theres a problem with the TC mabe try adjusting the throttle cable
I will also move the thread to the 911 forum for exposure ------------- Throttle cable failure has been common on 1994 - 1998 12 valve diesel engines, usually after about 30,000 miles on the cable. I am now on my third cable, and am curious to see if the new design will be more reliable. Twice I have managed to replace my cable in the nick of time and I know of several people who have been stranded by cable failure. It is a good idea to carry a spare cable for roadside repair. If you have the older cable WITHOUT a plastic sheath (i.e. the metal cable is exposed - it will probably be frayed) at the throttle lever, carry a spare or have it replaced with the new design. If you do not, you will probably have cable failure sooner or later. When I did this last time, I skipped several steps in the instructions and found that other parts of the instructions would not work on my 1994 model. My notes are added in italics. Thanks mate! Good hint!
I was to change the cable pretty soon anyway as it is sharp curved - the effect was that the throttle pedal felt ´hard´after releasing the throttle, and needed some force to accelerate again. Strange enough, although one could actually SEE the sharp bend, the effect is gone after the TC swap!?!?!? Anyhow, before the TC swap the O/D was working fine (in contrast to the other gears, where there was massive slippage). Someone was telling me only today, that the O/D require to be adjusted (some kind of a lever going into the O/D???) after a swap - can anyone confirm this, and tell what needs to be done in detail, pls. |
i don't know on the 47rh but on my 47re the detent cable, the cable that moves on the tranny when the throttle is increased/decreased needs to be adjusted. Dave @ Goerend Trans. told me with the truck off, press the accelerator petal to WOT and make sure that that lever/cable on the tranny is at it's maximum pull/rotation. if you crawl under the truck and someone presses and releases the accelerator pedal then you should see the part i am talking about move. when they press the accelerator padal however far the lever moves on the tranny, take and push the lever that way and see if it'll move any more. if so adjust it to where it is at max. rotation at WOT...
hope this helps. also did you check the fluid when hot, in neutral, on level ground? |
Thanks Benjamin!
I will have this detent cable checked too. The fluids are checked ok, when at the right temperature, etc., hence missing pressure might not be the root cause for the problem. Cheers, Tom |
at idle it is at it's lowest pressure . the reason to be in neutral is the pump flows the same volume of fluid as in drive and it helps get the proper ammount in it. mine read full at park but was 2 quarts low in neutral.....

Did you check the the small plug above the shift linkage on the trans? The little rubber outer seal may have slipped down inside causing the plug not to seat fully. It happened to me. You can pull the plug and remove the rubber outter seal and try it again..
