99 f350 12v tach problems

trying to get my tach working

I am not going to go to destroke or ford cummins half the fun of doing a conversion is figuring it out

I tied the dodge setup didn't work

so I did the ford setup with the cam sensor take #85 the cam sensor wire and the #48 wire the tach wire and wire them together before pcm

wondering it I might have the sensor to close to the harmonic about .030

I ground in the 2 extra notches so I have 4

I tested wire from sensor to the pcm block I haven't tested the other to the tach yet

That's how I have mine set up and it works, but I want to check it at cummins with an optical tach to see how close it is, seem like it's a couple hundred rpm's too high on the gauge. I used a 99 escort crank sensor ($19.99 @ orielly's), but I think any two wire sensor will work. I'll try gettin a pic of the mount, but from reading other thing you figured out, making a mount will be no prob!

I will get a pic of it tomorrow how close did you put your sensor I am wondering if I am too far away

timdale 04-19-2012 09:25 PM

.018"

deck60 04-20-2012 12:22 PM

well that might be the issue I am sure I am at .040 I will set it to .018 tomorrow

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

it works !!!!!! timdale was 100% right on about the .018

tie 85 and 48 togethere before the pcm hook one wire at sensor and the other wire will go to #85 dark green ground the other wire at sensor

I used the cam sensor from a v10 I think most of them are the same

made a bracket

installed it here is where i messed up I set it at about .040 maybe a little more

I was told it needed to be .018 so I set it to .018 and I have a tach

here is my photo bucket with my bracket and much more stuff

Deck60, how accurate do you think your tach is? I think mine is about 500rpm,s too high, on the gauge. At 65 in 5th the tach reads 2600. According to a couple rpm calculators I've used it should be 1850-1900, with the .77 o/d gear, 3.73 rears and 305/65-18 tires. Maybe I'll mess with the sensor clearance. At idle it's about 300 too high, so the higher it revs the more it's off

deck60 04-29-2012 04:52 PM

at Idle is reads 650-800 range and wide open against the governor about 2600-2700 and I am all stock so I think it is right on

Maybe the sensor I used (99 escort) is causing me problems. You used the v10 cam sensor?

sorry to ask random an off topic question but where did you guys find a wiring diagram for the pcm?

I have a friend with a auto shop, got it from him. Most any repair shop should have what you need
