Cummins in 93 chevy-questions about 4x4
Im probably going to buy a 93 chevy 3500 4x4 from a friend of mine that has no motor in it. i have a 12v cummins motor thats in parts and im wanting to build it from ground up to make around 450-500 hp. im wanting to use a nv4500 tranny and use a billet shaft and dd clutch. im just having a hard time finding out what transfer case i need to purchase that will work good and be tuff enough to handle the hp and torque. I'll be using the 4x4 a lot and maybe sled pull a few times. Surely i dont have to go with a solid axle do i? Hopefully someone on here can give me the answers. Im aware that i will have to re-do my drive-shafts. Im just trying to get my ducks in a row before i start if you all know what i mean. Thanks for any help!

Yes you'd want a solid axle if it was my truck but you can get away with A nv4500 with a 241 dhd and the the front can be beefed up enough as long as it's not pulling every weekend...

241dhd is the 241 Dodge heavy Duty transfercase. It was used behind the Cummins I know through '95.....At some point they switched to ......mmmm......the 271? I just finished up on a 12v/241dhd/nv4500 into my 97 suburban, and I can tell you that the solid axle swap into it was more time consuming/costly than most of the rest of the conversion. I'm glad i did it though.

If its going to be a street only truck i would leave the ifs if its going off road and used as a truck the ifs needs to go.I do laugh at how gm used the ifs even on a 1ton where ford only uses it on a 1/2 ton anything bigger is still a solid axle.

What model did you get your solid axle out of and does the 4x4 stick in the floor stay in the same spot? I think i'll probably go with the solid after asking around. if i ever get this truck done, its gonna catch a lot of hell and i want it to be as bullet-proof as i can make it. a lot of people brag on the np-205 dodge transfer cases. do you guys know much about those and if they would work? i appreciate all the info so far, im glad i found this site |
I know ford used the twin i beams on the f250 from 80-96 but when it became a super duty it has a normal axle in the front now.

does a person need to use coil springs or leaf springs when doing a SAS?

t case
I have been doing tons of research on t cases I am using a 273 behind my 4500 you will have to change the input shaft and make sure you do the 5th gear fix and machine about .030 off input
input shaft http://www.allstategear.com/ part # 5086311AA permanent fifth gear fix NV4500 Transmission 5th Gear Repair transfer case id first digit speed 1=1speed 2=2 speed second digit is strength of case 7 is stronger than 4 3 digit is how it is shifted 1= manual 3= electric I used a 273 but made it into a manual ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- one more thing what side is your front dropping in on drivers or pass the 205 was primarily a pass drop t case and is almost bullet proof it is a solid gear to gear and does produce some noise |
